colcon2010, the closest Art League is about 30 minutes away from me (Which is reasonable enough). I will consider that option. And there are some museums around me. They are small ones for people around town but still a museum. I will research the one around me. I’m sure they’ll have a program. I’ll look for ateliers around my area. (I can’t seem to find them closer to me)

redbug119, Thank you. I will research NHIA’s program. Hopefully I could get a scholarship as well. I wish the best of luck to your daughter.

drae27, I received your message. I replied to you but I am not sure if it through. I will send it to your email just in case.

Hi littleorange, I bet your parents are proud of you for exploring your options and showing such motivation! You are obviously dedicated to learning as much as you can! Like drae said, where there is a will, there’s a way. If the pre-college sessions are too pricey or inconvenient (for instance, if you have a summer job or your parents just want to travel with you while they can) the local options can be just as valuable an experience! In our experience, the best program was at the atelier, with the Art League a close second, and the museum third. Of course this can vary with every institution so just ask around and/or go see their work, talk to the faculty, etc. I would say the teacher is the most important piece of the puzzle no matter where you go locally. Kudos to you for starting to search early on for a summer program!

little- thanks,my D is now a sophomore at MCAD. She liked NHIA but wanted more of a big city, and she loved Minneapolis, so it was a no brainer. During her junior and senior year she found a local art guild that was mostly adults, but students were welcome as well. Every Saturday they had a figure drawing session and she went almost every week. She gained a lot of confidence in her figure drawing and had several nice portfolio pieces. She also got the input of the more accomplished adult artists and came away with a much improved technique. My S, while still in high school, wanted to take a adult education art class but could not because it was only open to adults not in high school. He approached the teacher and asked if he could sit in, so she agreed to try him out for a week to see how he fit in with the adults. He did great in the class, and while he didn’t pursue at art career, it gave him the confidence in going after what you want. So - look around and explore what you thought might be impossible and worm your way in :-)

colcon2010 and redbug119, Thank you! I’m still searching for an atelier that is close enough for me to go to weekly. And I guess my best bet so far is a small class that’s in town. (Unless I find a cheap one in the city that is…) Thank you guys for your support! It really does mean a lot to me!
