Hey, I'm a junior and just took my ACT. I did well on them, so I was wondering if I need to take any SAT IIs. I looked this up online, and only a few colleges require SAT IIs(harvard, princeton, georgetown). Most schools state that if I send in my ACT score, I don't need the SAT or SAT IIs. If I'm wrong, please correct me. So would not taking any SAT IIs hurt me in any way? Do colleges really "require" them even though they state they don't? Thanks a lot!

It depends on the schools you want to apply to. If schools say that they are "recommended", then you probably want to take them. Otherwise, no need.

If they say they take the ACT in lieu of SAT II, then they do and not taking the SAT II's won't hurt you. The same would probably be true for schools at which SAT II's are merely recommended; if a school that requires them takes the ACT instead, why wouldn't a school that doesn't require them?

This thread might help, especially post #9 (but check colleges' websites for new policies with regard to the class of 2012).

Thanks guys. So according to this info, if I were to apply to Yale and send in just my ACT score, I wouldn't be at a disadvantage compared to kids who send in SAT IIs? And if anyone has had first-hand experience sending in just an ACT score, please elaborate.

Of course, those who send in SAT IIs have demonstrated their expertise in a subject, while you have not. It doesnt hurt you, but they have an advantage you do not.
