Is it really that important to take them during high school? Should I take them after passing the AP's? Do top universities such as the Ivy's want them?

I believe that all Ivy League colleges require two; so, yes, it is important.

Go here for list of colleges that require, recommend or consider IIs: [Compass: Admissions Requirements](<a href=“SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations - Compass Education Group”>SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations - Compass Education Group)

If you are applying to a number ivies and others on the list under the required column you must take IIs and you must take them by no later than the Oct or Nov testing date (depending on college) in your senior year of high school if applying early decision or early action and by the Dec or Jan test date (depending on college) if applying regular admission. If a college requires IIs and you do not submit them that would mean you will be denied admission for failure to submit required materials; in other words, they won’t even consider your application.

The only exception to the above is that some of those colleges that require IIs accept the ACT w/writing in lieu of both the SAT and SAT II and thus you can submit just ACT to those. If you look at the list at the site provided you will see in the required column an * next to the number for some of the colleges. That means the college accepts the ACT in lieu of both the SAT and SAT IIs. If there is no * you must submit IIs regardless of whether you submit ACT.
