I have one teacher that currently teaches me who I feel would write me a good letter, however I feel that while my other teachers like me, I don't have as good as a relationship with them, but I do have a few sophomore year teachers who I have a solid relationship with. So like the title says, are sophomore teacher letters of recommendation frowned upon by top schools or is that fine.

Generally, it is recommended you use a junior or senior year teacher. Have you kept in contact with this sophomore teacher? Is s/he an advisor of a club you are in, or do you tutor for him/her? If you haven’t maintained some sort of contact, it is unlikely s/he could write you a detailed rec.

Jr year teachers are usually the best, because they have seen your work for a full year and tend to have taught you in more advanced classes. However there’s nothing wrong with a soph year teacher if they know you well and can write you a good LOR. Particularly for early applications (EA, ED or rolling), sr teachers that you have not had for a course previously may not be the best choice due to the short time amount of time they will have known you before writing the LOR, especially if your HS starts in Sept.

One caveat to soph year teachers is if the college specifies jr or sr year teachers.

what if I want my Debate Coach to write me a letter of recommendation, would that have to be an additional recommendation outside of the two teacher ones, My coach has taught me in an electrical engineering class I am taking but that has only been for a semester, however he has coached me for 3 years.
