Are there affordable summer programs out there for high school students?

<p>It seems like almost all of the summer programs at colleges are thousands of dollars. I'm in California, are there any options out there for me that are a little more affordable?</p>

<p>There are some that are free, but they are very competitive. Also it depends on your area of interest. There are many threads on here regarding summer programs. Off the top of my head some free programs include RSI, TASP, YSP, SSP. I think the deadlines for this summer may have pased for these. Look at offerings by your local colleges also.</p>

<p>All of the colleges around me are thousands and thousands of dollars. I can't see myself spending that much money for one summer.</p>

<p>Yes, most programs are extremely competitive.
Instead of a program, I got a paid internship at a laboratory so it was definitely affordable (I made a profit!).</p>
