Are there any golf courses and ski hills?

I dont mean in NYC of course. Just around the area, that can be quite easily accessed. I don't want to bring my board and clubs down there and find that I have no where to use them.

there's a huge ski resort on staten island.

I'm sure there are golf courses in Queens.

there are indoor driving ranges in Manhattan

i think outside of manhattan, there should be quite a few pretty nice golf courses if you're willing to venture out there and pay for it

In the suburbs North of the city (Westchester County) there are plenty of really nice golf courses. Just a 30 - 40 minute train ride north.

alright cool thnx, and these places can be reached by train and/or public transportation? I dont think I'll buy a car in NYU.

north jersey has nice golf courses too. Not too far away.

NYU has a ski club. They have a couple of getaway trips a year:

<a href="http://www.nyu.edu/clubs/ski/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.nyu.edu/clubs/ski/index.html</a></p>

There is also a Golf team:

<a href="http://www.nyuathletics.com/teams/default.asp?pg=Golf&s=M%5B/url%5D">http://www.nyuathletics.com/teams/default.asp?pg=Golf&s=M</a></p>

I would not recommend bringing your board and clubs. You asked about easy accessibility, and the answer to that would be no. There are no ski areas anywhere close to the city. You're talking hundreds of miles away. Even with a couple of ski excursions by the ski club, it's a major trip away from the city. Golf may be closer but it is not really more easily accessible. Unless all you want to do is hit balls at an indoor range in the city and if that's what you want, you can use one of their clubs. Frankly, the opportunity to do those things will be so limited that I wouldn't bother planning on them by bringing your own equipment. Then there's also the problem of having space in your dorm to store them. You won't.

matth ive got to disagree with u there, there are multiple ski resorts within an hours driving distance from NYC, the biggest of which is Mountain Creek. It's located in Vernon, NJ and is a local favorite for most people in New Jersey. Besides Mountain Creek there are various other ski hills including Sterling Forest, Mt. Peter, and Capgaw (as well as Hunter which is a bit farther up the the NY Thruway) also Mountain Creek runs a shuttle system from the port authority at NYC to Vernon, NJ and I believe its even free. Not to mention places like Vermont and New Hampshire are relatively close and a perfect driving distance if you were looking to go away for the weekend. So there, just thought id set the record straight on this one

you gotta know somebody that's named burton1080 would know. here's the bus info for Vernon <a href="http://mcecom.intrawest.com/njtransit.html%5B/url%5D">http://mcecom.intrawest.com/njtransit.html</a></p>

burton, the key phrase in the original post, to which I was replying, was "easily accessible". An hour's drive from the GW bridge for someone without a car is not my idea of easily accessible. I suppose I should have specified that what I mean by 'ski areas' are not places which would be an hour's drive. If you're used to 'real' mountains, like those found in upstate NY or Vermont or the Rockies, these smaller places which are closer to the city are not going to be worth the hassle of getting there. Taking a trip to Stowe or Killington or Bolton Valley or other actual skiing areas is obviously possible for a weekend but they're also not exactly "easily accessible", more like a 350 mile drive, which again, if you don't have a car is a problem.

I'd definitely bring boards and clubs if were you guys. NYU dorms (save Weinstein) tend to be much bigger than those of other colleges', so there will be room to store them. Storage space really shouldn't be a problem, this isn't a jacuzzi we're talking about here (University Hall even has walk-in closets and Third North/Hayden rooms tend to a pretty decent storage space also).

Golf is closer than skiiing...many courses in NJ and Westchester are only an hour away (I live in Manhattan and do frequent these). Skiiing is a little farther, but not inaccesible by any means. You can even join NYU's ski club....it will be cheaper to ski and give you a means of transportation.

<a href="http://www.nyu.edu/clubs/ski/%5B/url%5D">http://www.nyu.edu/clubs/ski/</a></p>

I guess ill bring them. I dont mind shuttles, I take them to go Lake Louis all the time (which is about 3 hours of driving) so I'm cool with that.

but thanx for all the input.

you can golf at chelsea piers

"Besides Mountain Creek there are various other ski hills including Sterling Forest, Mt. Peter, and Capgaw"
anyone who's serious about skiing or snowboarding knows that these mountains are absolute garbage and are not worth the hour drive. Even Hunter and Windham are at best decent. So the only good skiing easily accessible from NYU would be their trips to Canada, Vermont and Lake Placid.

(sterling forest, campgaw,mt peter) i was only giving some other options, like I stated Mountain Creek is the NJ local favorite and more then worth the drive....."anyone whos serious about snowboarding" knows that Mountain Creek tops Lake Placid, any place in Eastern Canada and many Vermont resorts in terrain parks and halfpipe (which is half of what most snowboarders are looking for nowadays, espeically on the east coast)......if you really want to get into a discussion about it then fine obviously all the places you named have more vertical drop and snow then mountain creek but I am simply trying to make the point that it is worth it to bring your gear to NYU. Most dedicated snowboarders would find a free 1 hour bus ride from the port authority to get some decent turns in well worth the hassle.

haha sorry to dispute some of you over this since I don't post much and have just been lurking around here for a while (prospective transfer student) but I can confidently say that this is one subject that I am def. the most knowledgable about and I could argue this all day long......snowboarding is an addiction of mine.............Bottom line: BRING YOUR BOARD

"Bottom line: BRING YOUR BOARD"

Absolutely agreed...borads, skis, and golf clubs don't take much room. Its stupid not to bring it....unless you don't plan on any out of town trips. Manhattan is nice, but very few love it that much.

fair enough. I was looking at the mountain fromm a skier's perspective of going up to the summit and bombing it all the way down to the base lodge.
