Are there schools still accepting applications?

Hi,

I know it's way too late to submit applications, but just want to check. Are there any decent boarding or day schools that still accept applications? I'm not looking for those top schools.

Thanks.

If you are not looking for financial aid and the most competitive schools, then you should still have possibilities.

We did not do late applications, so I have no direct experience in this. However, I have followed this board for 2 years, and there have been a number of late applicants.

Take a look at boardingschoolreview.com. Some schools are listed as having rolling admissions after March 10th. Some schools that are not listed as rolling may still have openings after contract signing time, which is around April 10th. Sometimes Admissions miscalculates yield (the percent of admitted students who sign contracts). More typically, a certain type of student did not accept Admissions offers. This can be as basic as a gender imbalance to not enough musicians for the orchestra.

If you have some schools in mind, call them now to discuss, or at least to get applications materials. Almost all boarding schools go on a 3-week March break which starts around the week of March 3rd. It is difficult to contact Admissions at many schools during this break. When Admissions comes back, they focus on the accepted students, and in many cases, they won't focus on late applications until mid-April. If you apply on a rolling basis, it would be best to get the application in ASAP, because they fill spots as applications come in.

Here are some great schools that might still have openings: Northfield Mt. Hermon, Blair Academy, Loomis (some years), Pomfret, Masters (for boarding), Kent and Tabor. Usually, the all boy and all girl schools have some openings. They offer a great education, but are not as popular right now.

If you can afford an educational consultant who specializes in prep school placement, this would be helpful. Someone experienced in the field should know quality schools that might have a few spots to fill. It certainly would save you time.

Even if you need financial aid, it is still possible but difficult. Many schools might accept you late but place you on a waitlist for fa. Someone who posts here from St. Andrews Sewanee said that sometimes there were fa possibilities there after March 10th.

The ssat website posts a list of schools that still have openings, but I don't think they post it until around May 1st. It think it's called the scca list.

Good luck!

I'm just looking for admission to a non-crappy boarding school.

Thank you.

There are plenty of fine schools that have rolling admissions. As Burb Parent suggested, go to boardingschoolreview.com and look at the schools you think are "non-crappy," then visit their profile page to see if they indicate that they have rolling admissions. I couldn't figure out a way to isolate and search for this one criteria, so you'll need to check each school that interests you one-by-one (until someone can come up with a search for this).

Here's an example from Avon Old Farms School:

Scroll down until you see this:

Admission

Application Deadline...................................Feb. 1 / rolling................Jan. 15

if you're moving from somewhere far, schools do admissions I think

a girl who moved from canada applied in june and got accepted at my school

Is there any way to search any of the bs directories for shcs w/ later admissions deadlines? Are the prep schs w/ LD prgms have later deadlines?

nyc, I just did a quick search on bsr for schools with LD programs. Almost all of them had rolling admissions. Unfortunately, I don't think you can search for a school using Rolling Admissions as a category. By the way, do you also post as foolishpleasure? Both of you abbreviate schools as shcs (instead of schs). :)

I think a lot of schools do accept late apps, you should call them and ask.

Sorry for using your thread to ask a questions of my own,
question for Burb Parent: if I just applied and some schools agreed to give me a March 10th decision, then my app. isn't considered late, right? Thanks in advance!

I'm not burb parent (heck, i am not even a parent!), but if the school told you that they would give you a March 10 decision, then your application would not be considered late.

I'm not sure when a school actually looks at a late application--do they look at it before the April deadline, or hold off on it until they get an idea of the number of contracts that have been sent back? Maybe it varies from school to school.

My guess is that a March 10th decision is part of the normal decision process.

For KitKatBar -- My guess is that some schools will look at late applications after they have signed contracts (around mid-April). This way, they will know if they are missing certain types and talents in the incoming class. My guess is that other schools know that historically they have more than a few openings by mid-April, so they would look at late applications earlier. I think even the most competitive schools take late applications, but the probability of acceptance is much lower than their already low acceptance rates. When my son was in 7th grade, we did a few May tours at competitive schools. They were still interviewing, but at a much slower pace than we witnessed the next fall..

My bad - - I meant to post any non-LD schools w/ late deadlines.

Foolish pleasure?

Thank you.

HAHAHAHAHAHA
sorry but I just had to reply to that.

Actually I think it's too late right now to go to a really good school, or else I would have jumped at the possibility a couple weeks back. insert cry here
But I'm just waiting to be corrected :D
