AP Calc AB (heard from classmates it’s easier than the math class I’m taking now which is precalculus+trig)
AP Lang (class is pretty easy)
AP USH (hard and a lot of work)
AP Seminar (teacher is chill so it’s also a chill class)
AP Spanish (teacher is strict but the class is amazing)
Honors Anatomy (easy as heck apparently)
I’ve been trying to convince myself that I can do it considering that a lot of the classes I’m taking seem to be generally well-taught and chill classes except APUSH. Just scared that the people that I asked are undermining the true difficulty of the classes. Do you guys have any advice on any of the classes or is 5 APs is manageable? Will I still have time to just rest and sleep? I’m in Spanish 3 right now and I’m also thinking of pushing AP Spanish to senior year, but then again, senior year would be hard enough with Calc BC and AP Lit (and other APs) plus college apps so…
I have like 10 days to decide if I want to change my schedule. Oh well, time to stress
Ya that’s def manageable. APUSH really depends on ur teacher and u can always drop if u feel like its too hard. And o its not a good idea to take AP Spanish senior year cuz ull forget everything from Span 3 and a lot of AP Span depends on whether or not u rmbr ur stuff from Span 3.
What kinds of colleges are you targeting? If you are going for selective schools, you might want to hold off on anatomy until you have biology, chemistry and physics (lab sciences) under your belt. Also keep room for Spanish.
Overall, it sounds doable.
I have no interest in the sciences, so although I’m targeting selective schools, I’m majoring and focusing on schools with good humanities programs rather than STEM (or preferably, both programs are good). I’m going to take Regular Physics senior year as most of my classmates are also doing. I considered taking AP Chem but I have no interest in the subject and I won’t find motivation to do the work. Is it okay to focus on one side of academics or should I be more well-rounded, even if I will not even touch the sciences in the future?
“Is it okay to focus on one side of academics or should I be more well-rounded, even if I will not even touch the sciences in the future?”
You really should have the bio-chem-physics trifecta in order to be a competitive applicant at a highly selective school, even as a humanities major. They don’t have to be taken at the AP level, however. State schools have more relaxed requirements, and two years of science may be enough. It really depends on the colleges you are targeting.
When a very selective school “recommends” a certain number of years in a subject, you can bet all the successful non-hooked applicants will have them on their transcript.
To get into a selective school, you’re going to want your guidance counselor to tell the college you have taken the most rigorous course load available. Exactly what this means can vary from school to school (talk to your GC), but it often encompasses taking all the cores at some level or another. Plus college admissions will almost certainly be able to tell if you are avoiding core classes in a subject you don’t enjoy.
Proceed accordingly.
I completely agree that I should take those core classes, which I am going to do, since I took Advanced Biology freshman year, Honors Chem this year and I am doing Regular Physics senior year. My only concern is that I am not taking AP in any of these classes. Will that be bad?
“My only concern is that I am not taking AP in any of these classes. Will that be bad?”
Not for a humanities hopeful. It will be important to still get strong grades in those classes, however.
Alright, got it. Thank you very much for your advice! It helped immensely
Anddd update. I’ve decided to listen to your guys’ concerns about the science part of my schedule after some research and I decided to switch my schedule to add an AP Chemistry while removing AP Spanish. So AP Lang, APUSH, AP Calc AB, AP Chem, AP Seminar, Spanish 4 Honors. Any advice on this schedule now and its manageability? ?
From what I understand AP Seminar is a 2 year commitment without much benefit. Other than that your sched looks very much what a top-end 11th grader should be taking.
AP Chemistry is often one of the harder AP classes. It varies by school, so talk to kids who have taken it before, the teacher, and your guidance counselor to get an idea of the workload. You might want to just take honors physics as a junior, and think about an AP science next year.
Ummmm, nobody had a concern with not having an AP science. Everyone who commented stated that you should have bio/chem/physics, but you do not need an AP. Conversely, everyone who commented said you should keep Spanish.
If you really want to do an AP science, you should push it to senior year and get physics out of the way. If you plan to continue in Spanish (as you should), you should not take a year’s break and labor under the erroneous opinion that you will be able to pick it up again effortlessly as a senior.
Thank you for your input. I know that nobody really suggested an AP science, but seeing as Physics is not taken until senior year and I do admit honors anatomy is one of the least challenging classes, I changed my mind. I am continuing with Spanish, I am just taking AP Spanish senior year and Spanish 4H junior year. I actually have a very good grade in Honors Chem and my teacher suggested I continue to AP Chem but I was mainly afraid of taking Chem and APUSH together, but a lot of people in my class are doing it, so that’s another thing that changed my mind. Sorry if I was a bit sudden, but yesterday was just a whole lot of decision making.
I’d stick with your current schedule + honors anatomy + Spanish 4H.
You DO NOT need AP chem and 5 APs would be too much - you’ll be better off spending time on your ECs and on test prep than on a 5th AP.
DO take AP Spanish and Physics senior year though.
