<p>First Chair is definitely an honor. Getting your essay published is not an award, but definitely a nice accomplishment that will be viewed favorably. Musical ability is a plus, especially if you indicate you will participate in music at school on some level or another.</p>

<p>The essay publication would depend on the book. If this was a book that
you then order copies of to buy and hence they published your essay- no.
If it was a prestigious publication, yes.</p>
<p>The acid test you might want to use is whether it will look like you are
over-representing something....if not then you are fine listing it under
your honors.</p>
