“Briefly describe any scholastic distinctions or honors you have won beginning with ninth grade.”
Is this supposed to be like an essay, or simply a descriptive list of honors that I’ve received? Also, what kinds of honors are classified as “scholastic”? Do they mean specifically school-related or in academic clubs/contests as well?

I'm curious too: do things like MUN and debate awards count as scholastic distinctions? How about being nominated, selected, and inducted into NHS?

I'm still confused about which awards qualify as "scholastic". I think NHS counts. I have a few UIL and HOSA awards, and I was also a semi-finalist of a writing contest. Do those count?

theoneo, this is probably a stupid question =D, but what's MUN?

MUN = Model United Nations. It's an extracurricular activity in which you go to conferences where you act as a delegate for a given nation (Russian Federation, Costa Rica, and Eritrea, to name a few) and have mock United Nations sessions using the committees that are in the real UN.

Eh, I didn't count NHS ('cause in my school it's a real club, so I put projects I did through NHS in the EC section). But I did count NMS stuff, science fair stuff, some violin certificates (which were based on music theory tests as well as performance), stuff like that. So I interpreted it relatively loosely, and would definitely count debate/MUN awards if they were significant enough to merit inclusion in your app.

^ Yeah, I was curious about that too Kaulie, since I'm Prez of Debate at my school and have placed a bunch of times. What I did for the time being, was put in a descriptive paragraph of the events I compete/place in, my NFL points, etc in that "other info" box at the bottom.

i put things like AP award, National Merit, Rensselaer medal, and some of the math competitions in which we placed in top 5 in region/district or w/e.

any other thoughts on this? I wanna finish my common app =P

I'll probably just put any kind of academic-related award. I guess the worst that could happen is that they'd disregard the ones that "don't count".
