Are these considered extra curriculars

Over the years I have put a lot of time into the following two things:

App Development - I have developed many apps with tens of thousands of downloads

YouTube - I have published a lot of high quality tech videos with hundreds of thousands of views.

My question is this: are these considered extracurriculars? Or are they just hobbies?

The work you did in apps is definitely considered an extracurricular. But I’m not sure about YouTube. My advice is, mention it in your essays and what kind of an effect it had on you.

@Izzie97‌ thanks! Anyone else have an idea?

i agree that the apps are. YouTube videos are questionable… depends on the content (would you want admissions see them?). The types of YouTube videos you might want to talk about would be if you made some really useful “how to” videos that got a lot of hits. Just goofy stuff that got hits, not so much. If that makes any sense…

Actually, I’d say the youtube videos are definitely worth mentioning and is absolutely an EC. If you aren’t sure whether they’d appreciate the content, don’t tell them what type of videos they are, but sounds like your stuff is quality because tech ones usually are. But the fact that you have hundreds of thousands of views is impressive.

It begs for them to ask for links or to Google – consider that before deciding whether to mention them. You can get hundreds of thousands of hits of your cat throwing up… that isn’t an accomplishment in itself.

@intparent I understand. The videos are in depth reviews, how-tos, and tech news. The videos have (in my opinion) good production quality and editing, and I wouldn’t be worried of schools watching them. However my internet “persona” is not linked to my name so it’s unlikely they will find the videos.

Put both of those in - as separate line items. Can you make your own company, example: “Founder of XXX” - develop and xxx apps for … (I’m in over my head here).
