Are these good freshman 1st quarter grades?

I know these are relatively good...we have about 400 people in our class and my friend with similar grades (all honors) in the class of 2016 had a 16 rank....so I think I would be in at least the top 10 percent roughly. Our school doesn't calculate rank but it accidentally was posted last year...haha....but What do you think?

English 9 Honors: 92
Spanish 1 CP1: 97
World History Honors: 94
Geometry Honors: 87 (I did bad on one test...but I'm not going to make any excuses...kind of wish it was at least a 90 though :( )
Bio Honors: 91 (this class is so difficult...he says its really difficult to get an A/A-...he says he's been teaching for like 15 years and one person got an A+...)
Intro to Theater: 92
Health: 99
GPA: 3.94 weighted

It’s nice to see you proactive, but colleges usually look at freshman grades more leniently than other years. Geometry is tough, I know how you feel. I’d be more concerned about how you’re getting a 92 in such a garbage class as theater (no offense if you like the subject, it’s just…not a difficult class). In the end, I just suggest relaxing, focusing on Geometry, Bio, and English, and just getting things done on time. Your quarter grades aren’t reported to colleges.

shrug I’m a senior and the lowest grade I ever got was in gym freshman year.

OP: Is 91 an A or a B at your school? How about 92? What’s your unweighted GPA?

(I mean, if your rank is good then you’re fine, because the purpose of rank is to give a context to your GPA, but you don’t really know what your rank is.)

Okay there are no tests in theater…its more of an assessment like we act and a lot of things are learned…its not a “when you act u show emotion”…its like the equivalent of an honors english class…haha hence the same grade… I am a little offended actually haha…I took the class to become more confident with myself and learn about theater…I am not concerned…Its not a garbage class…I guess it may appear that way but you have no context on how difficult it is so its understandable…Also our school has one of the best acting departments in the US for a public school

A 91 is an A- which is given a different weight than a or a b plus and a 92 would also fall in that area…every school calculates GPA differently so I don’t think the unweighted GPA is that important as is the weighted GPA…the highest someone can get in our grade is a 4.5 weighted but it is different everywhere…I’ll talk to my guidance counselor about my rank because i know people here will be like thats horrible when they dont truly understand…

Thanks for your comments!!

Unweighted GPA = your GPA on a 4.0 scale, with A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, etc. It’s not a standardized thing (hence standardized tests), but it doesn’t call a B an A and it’s usually a lot more uniform from school to school than weighted GPA is.

On the contrary, colleges want to compare apples to apples, so they look for unweighted first, and then weighted if, for example, they’re an honors college that looks at honors/advanced/AP classes. Your unweighted right now (3.85) isn’t that different, but it will be down the stretch. And if theater is anything as remotely as hard as you say it is, than good job with the 92.

oh okay so wait what would mine be? Our school doesnt include theater and health in Gpa…So i guess mine would be a 3.8 considering the A- to be A’s…and my original question…is it good?

Grading scales vary by school, but the strictest one I’ve seen is 94-100 = A = 4.0, 85-93 = B = 3.0, so I’ll use that to give you a lower-bound estimate. If your school already calculates unweighted GPA with their own grading scale, then you can go with that.

Without theater and health, your unweighted GPA would be 3.4.
If theater and health are one-credit classes, then your unweighted GPA with those included would be 3.43.

But if you let A minus = 3.7 (your school seems to do something like this), then your unweighted GPA would be 3.68.
If theater and health are one-credit classes, then your unweighted GPA with those included would be 3.73.
