I'm trying to enroll in an 3000-level politics class. During my sign-up (I'm a rising 3rd year), I was only able to get on the wait list at #14. This was despite having one of the earlier sign-up time slots for rising third years. I later moved up to #11 out of a 37 people wait list.

I checked SIS recently, and two more spots had opened up...26/26 (waitlist 37 people) to 26/28 (with a waitlist still of 37 people). I tried enrolling, however I received this message:

You are unable to enroll in this class at this time. Available seats are reserved and you do not meet the reserve capacity requirements.

The next day, I checked SIS again. This time, another 2 spots had opened up to 28/30. There was still a 37 people waitlist, and I am still at #11, but received the same error message when I tried enrolling.

Are these seats reserved for incoming first years or am I missing something? I find it a little hard to believe it's for first years considering the waitlist...? I really need this class, and my friends have warned me this professor is particularly stubborn in using course-action or alternative means. Even if you're waitlist #1 and you sit through all his classes during the add/drop period, he refuses to sign forms. I also plan to finish one year early, which will be unfortunate if I don't get in as the class is only offered during fall semester.

I’m not sure whether those spots are being open for first-years or possibly 2nd and 3rd year transfers, but even if they did, you will not be able to change your schedule until early August once registration re-opens to all students. (Assuming that registration still gets closed off to returning students during the summer months). I think it is around August 4th, there is usually a lot of movement with registration. You might have better luck then? I had no luck getting into any upper level PLAP courses when I entered as a transfer but ended up getting into the ones I wanted once August rolled around.

Yes, the open spots are reserved for first year orientation sessions.

To address your comment regarding why they would have spots for 1st years when they have a wait list for upperclassman. The spots for 1st years is usually determined in advance of registration, hence the number on the wait has little to do with the openings they allow for 1st year registration during orientation.

I am sure in your position it is frustrating. However I would still email the professor.

i get this message when i attempt to enroll in a class: Class 11653 is full. There are currently no seats available and the wait list is full.

but…the class is open and so is the discussion section. is it because i can’t sign up for classes until aug. 1st even though i am an upperclassman?
