Political Science waitlists, fall 2011

Hey guys,

I have a question regarding waitlists for poly sci classes. I've been trying to get on the waitlist for a class for about a month now with no luck. Back when I started the waitlist was 10, and now its down to 8. I thought that meant there is 2 openings in the waitlist, but I can't seem to get on the waitlist yet even though I've been trying everyday. I tried adding another class which also has a unfull waitlist just to see what would happen and I wasn't able to get on it either, with telebears saying that it too is full. But there doesn't seem to be any change in numbers on the berkeley schedule from day to day. What gives? To waitlists close in these clases or what? Will I have to wait for them to clear out once the semester starts?

give us a specific class number and we can see what may be going on.

I was refering to PS149E, the waitlist had 10 people in it a while back, then about a week or two it fell to 9, and now it’s at 8. I am under the understanding that starting this week waitlists are processed daily. I tried enrolling in PS 139D just to see if it was possible, but was also told the waitlist was full (I had previously seen 10 people on that waitlist as well, but now there’s only 5 and telebears still says its full).

I’m already enrolled in 2 political science classes and I thought maybe that was why I couldn’t get into a third one, but I tried enrolling into PS166 (which had openings at that point) just to see if telebears would allow me to get into a third poly sci class and it did.

I’ve been trying to get into PS149E every day since mid July or so and still no luck… :frowning:
I know my chances aren’t that great, but I wanted to try anyways

It is pretty clear that someone in the department is resetting the waitlist size down as they clear people into the class each evening. It is not a usual practice for classes, but every department can determine its chosen approach for courses it will deliver.

I suspected that’s what they might’ve been doing, I had even thought about contacting them about it. Would you happen to know if waitlists are usually re-opened at some point when departments engage in this practice? I had hypothesized that maybe the department would shrink the current waitlist down to nonexistence once everyone currently on it got into the class and would then re-allow people to sign up for empty slots in the class itself or the waitlist, but I could be mistaken on that. Any thoughts on this?

You should email the Poli Sci advisors and ask them about it. They probably have the most info on course enrollment/waitlist or at the very least could obtain that info for you. The advisors were helpful when I spoke to them in person, so I assume they’d be prompt about answering emails as well.

I just emailed them to see what’s the matter. Thanks for the input!

Hey, it would be great if you can share any info you get. I’m trying to basically get into any poli sci class (can’t do a seminar because already have one) I can. Thanks!
