Are they really giving out more money now? and chances please :)

Hey. I didn't really consider Tulane until I started hearing all of these great things about it as well as hearing that they are starting to give out much more financial aid to northerners who are scared to head down to New Orleans after the hurricanes of the past years. I'm not really sure how true this is, but I was wondering if anyone knows. I know that there is no application fee for the common app. when applying to Tulane, so I thought that might be a sign that the rumors are true. Anyone know? Also, if anyone could chance me on getting any merit aid, I would really appreciate it.

Thank You!

With over 34,000 applications last year for something like 1600 freshman slots, and a 2008 freshman profile that includes 34% of students from the northeast, clearly their free application is working and there is not a lot of fear of hurricanes from students in the Northeast.

Tulane has always been generous with merit aid, although I think they revamped it a few years ago which reduced the amount of top merit aid to provide a larger number of smaller scholarships (the $17,000 or $18,000 ones- forget the actual dollar amt.)

Tulane also claims to meet something like 95% of need, so their financial aid is also good.

Your stats fall at about the 75th percentile of students accepted last year, and your EC's include community service (big at Tulane), so I'd guess that you'd be accepted and you are probably in contention for the smaller scholarship stated above or event the $24,000. If you apply you will hear back in 4 weeks and if you are getting one of these scholarships they will let you know then. There is a separate application and project for the full tuition scholarship.

Thanks so much for the information, I appreciate it.

I will attest to this. I just got my admissions decision a couple of days ago and they also notified me of my offer of the $24,000 scholarship. I haven't thought much about Tulane. I just recycled an essay and did the easy application. Between the 24k and fin aid I could probably pay for it. That's making it a much more serious option. They have the right idea for attracting more students. Throw money at us.

FWIW, I just came back from visiting my s there for parents weekend. While virtually all of his friends (the ones I met) had at least one of the scholarships, they were some pretty sharp kids-- one was waitlisted at Princeton. My s is very happy with Tulane. Give it a good look!

Princeton Review rated Tulane as one of the top schools for students happy with financial aid. It was also in the top ten for "happiest students." Based on my son, this is definately true.

Agreed for happiest students regarding work/life balance. Great campus, interesting city, same story here. S (who is now a sophomore) applied since the application is free, got the $24K scholarship and was sold after the visit. It wasn't on the radar prior to this chain of events. Tulane does a lot of thing right, starting with the admissions process.

Should I be feeling guilty that my s has $38K in scholarships?? :o

Is the $38K one a President Scholarship?

My son is also there as a freshman. He loves the school. He has made many friends in the short period of time (and he was not that social in high school) and told me he is doing a lot better academically now than he was in high school. The school has such a relaxed atmosphere and he is surrounded by many really smart students, it's really a good combination unlike some other Northeast ivy leagues that are cut-throat competitive.

Hi Stonebridge!
DS has 2 scholarships-- one is the Deans Honors Scholarship (DHS), which is a full tuition scholarship (and will increase annually with any tuition increases). The other is a $2k/yr National Merit scholarship. These replaced the initial award of the presidential scholarship, which was $24k/yr -- don't know if that figure will change for the incoming class. Has anyone out there gotten one yet?
I dont mean to sound like I am bragging (apologies if it does) -- I mention these scholarships because Tulane is VERY generous with $$$. My cousins dau had the $17k/yr scholarship but was also awarded one of the Community service scholarships which combined to cover full tuition for her. Anyone out there applying to Tulane, APPLY FOR THESE SCHOLARSHIPS! The DHS application is really quite easy-- and WELL worth it!!

Stonebridge-- my s's experienc has been just as you describe too. Happy students in a relaxed but challenging atmosphere.

Midterms this week. Happy? Relaxed? Ha!

as a note to anyone who applied because of the free app but really isn't considering it: VISIT. i only applied to have the quick decision and know i was accepted to a college early on. but once they offered me the 24k a year, my mom suggested we visit. i was pretty positive i didn't want to come here (i had even sent in my enrollment deposit somewhere else) but the day after i visited, i made the choice to come here. so definitely visit!
