Should I Even Bother With Tulane?

I got a letter in the mail and email stating that I've been "selected" to apply to Tulane with these pretty damn good guidlines...

-No Essay(s)
-No application fee
-Automatic scholarship consideration
-4 week decision notice

Looks like a sweet deal, right? All I would have to pay is $8 to send my ****ty as hell SAT scores. Now, why exactly would they recruit kids like me with a 1070 SAT (out of 1600) and a 3.1 GPA????? Perhaps they WANT to reject alot of people so it seems to other people as if the school is still really hard to get into? Or are they just desperate? My interest in the school is pretty good, but I'm still unsure of the situation there. Is the campus completely wrecked? Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

You might PM ctymomteacher as she has a son displaced from Tulane and planning to return. She would have first hand info for you.

KingJames - I don't have the answer to your question, but frankly I don't think the answer is relevant to your decision. If you would liked to be considered for admission, apply. Otherwise, don't.

PS, A visit to the campus early next year might ease your concerns.

Campus is not completely wrecked. In fact it's almost good as new and will certainly be entirely ready for us in the spring. By next Fall, most of the city should be getting back to normal. As of right now, as long as you don't leave campus, you'd never know a hurricane hit. But if you go a few blocks in any direction off campus, things are pretty desolate and there's still a lot of trash everywhere that just cannot be picked up right now.

As you know, I responded to your PM, but simply put, if you're interested in the school, apply. That seems self-evident. I wouldn't bother to second-guess their motives for letting you do so without paying and writing the essay, etc. Just consider yourself lucky if you were already interested, anyway, and do it.

For plenty of information on the campus' current condition, what's happening at Tulane, etc. etc. go to: http://emergency.tulane.edu/.

I have not been there, but information I've heard and seen (in photos) is different from what kraemer said - the "desolate" areas are further from campus, but you will see clean-up/construction debris many places. Near campus, there are many restaurants, shops open. French Quarter is open and alive. Other areas range in condition.

What's that old saying about a "gift horse?"

you should ABSOLUTELY apply! why wouldnt you?? if youre interested and it's free and they sent you that "selected student" email? (i got that too). obviously and as to be expected they are just experiencing a decline in applicants because of the events there, and because people think the campus is more destroyed than it actually is. however, apparently the campus did not sustain much damage anyways. and its still the same school. so apply! nows your chance!

Actually, hilary6, app rates are considerably UP from this time last year. Apparently , many people have as much interest as my son does in helping while getting a good education.

Yeah, I ended up applying and sending my SAT scores a few hours ago. Thanks alot guys for you information. When I thought of Tulane's campus,
I thought of a war zone or something. Since it's nothing like that at all, (i've also seen pics and stuff) Tulane's my #1 choice now. Even though there's a 1% chance of someone like me getting in, I'm going to do as much as possible. I decided to write the essay that's not required, and I'm going to send in two reccomendations. Even if I SOMEHOW get in, there's no way I'm going to be able to afford it. 41 thousand! Ha, good luck to me. Thanks again guys...

Plenty of merit-based aids for people of high qualifications, so don't hesitate to apply. When I applied, I'd never thought of getting academic scholarship cos I thought competition was keen, but hey, I got one though, which is worth 18K. That was like an awesome deal! Give it a shot and apply!

I was just having the same thoughts about the campus. I thought it was completely destroyed. I applied with that same application that was sent to you and got accepted. Im still a little turned off due to the fact that a lot of the city is messed up. The city is what attracted me in the first place. Im still wondering if they are gonna just accept a lot more people because of all the drama. That may work in your favor.

Wrong. Tulane will not lower admission standards due to unavoidable natural disaster. According to our president Scott Cowen, app are up by more than 40% compared with last year and the univ is trying to make the freshman class smaller than ever to make the univ more competitive. Admission will only be more difficult than previous years.

Thats what they say. But are they really telling the truth. I got in and my stats aren't all that high. Especially to be out of state.

RellyRell, being out of state has nothing at all to do with it. It's a private institution, so being for Louisiana doesn't really give an applicant an advantage. If anything, being from NC could help since they want some diversity.

Oh really, I didnt even know that. I dont know a whole lot about the school. I just applied there because of the application i was sent, no essay and no fee will attract most.

Hey, I got that offer too. Tulane has been sending me a lot of stuff, but I was never interested in their college. Their offer caught my attention though. Yeah, I forgot that it would cost $8 to send them my SAT scores. Can anyone tell me more about Tulane? Academically, is it better than UVA? I know this prob should be asked somewhere else, but I'm hoping you guys would know. What is the college best known for?

To any of you Tulane kids--

My S is interested in Tulane, took the PSAT in Oct and recently received a letter from them with the sales pitch.
Do any of you know what kind of PSAT score merits an unsolicited letter from Tulane--maybe the median SAT for applicants? We won't receive the scores from the HS until late January 2006.

Musictoad,
My S did very poorly on his PSAT's (he was sick for the previos 3 days before the test). We just contacted Tulane, asked to be on their mail and email lists. This summer we did receive the "Personal Application" email and the same packet in the mail. Tulane follows with numerous emails asking you to take advantage of this offer. My S did apply two weeks ago before the Nov 15th deadline and is waiting for a decision. He has now received a few more emails and another packet with the same offer with a January 15th deadline. I guess Tulanes admissions office has multiple databases that don't cross check between interested prospective students and students who have already applied. All that said, PSAT's is not the only source for them to put a student on their lists. Contact them and you should get one next summer.

PLANTREE, I think the confusion of the multiple databases to which you refer is a peculiarity of this year's troubles. When my son received the offer last year, after he finally responded, they stopped. This year, it seems hard for them to keep track of where he is. That's understandable since the Tulane people are trying to work from multiple offices all over the country, at least they were until a week or so ago. I think many of them have now returned to NOLA.

In any case, don't let the multiple mailings confuse you. Things are odd this year for obvious reasons. Bottom line: If you're interested in Tulane, go for it. If you're not, don't. Just as before. I believe that it will be an even better school for serious students than it was before: less luxurious in some ways--more service-oriented, better relationship with the city, and many more lower level classes taught by full-time faculty.

As for the PSAT that triggers a "Personal App," all I can offer is that my son's was within one point of semifinalist for our state last year. I don't know what the real range is. As for median SAT, if you go to the Tulane site, you can find SAT and ACT ranges for their major scholarships.
