I'm going to UCLA not Cal but I'm just curious (b/c my friend's sister is going to Cal).

I heard that only freshmen live in dorms; others (sophomores, juniors and seniors) live in off-campus. Is that true?

If transfers, who barely know about social life, off-campus housing and other student-life-related stuff about Cal, live in off-campus too, then how do they make friends? (this is a dumb question of course since everyone can befriend classmates, but how do they befriend others other than "classmates"?) How do they find off-campus places to live?

Transfers are guaranteed housing for the first year if they want it. Freshmen are guaranteed housing for the first two years. If students want to stay in campus housing after that there’s usually still space. Berkeley’s got a couple options specially aimed at transfers, like Wada and Martinez apartments (reserved for upper div/transfer students). I think older students are more likely to choose off campus options, partly for the cost and partly for more freedom.

Students who choose to live off-campus find housing just like non-transfers… you look for apartments, live with people you already know, choose to live in a co-op, etc.

Just to note that transfers are usually dined when they apply for a 2nd year housing.
