Are we allowed to bring extra furniture to the colleges?

I ask because I have a lot of clothes and I dont know if they will all fit in the wardrobe and I hang up 90% of my clothes. I was planning on purchasing a new one once I got there. Is it possible to do this?

I don’t think anyone will care. My suitemate has an extra portable wardrobe thing in our common room. It all depends on your roommate and the amount of space you have in your room.

You’re “allowed” to bring whatever furniture you want - it’s just a matter of how much you/your roommates are able/willing to cram in your room. I had a friend freshman year who had 3 full size sofas in his room (15X13, along with the standard issue 2 beds, 2 desks, etc.) - of course you had to climb over furniture to get from one side to the other.

I’d wait until July when you’re assigned your college - you’ll get a welcome package from your OWeek coordinators that should give you a much better idea of what the room is like.

If you plan on putting the wardrobe in your room, keep in mind that only 1/2 of the room is yours (assuming you have a double). If you want to crowd extra clothes into your 1/2 of the room, you have the right to do so, but don’t assume that you can take over the entire room with your “stuff.” Just be considerate.

Until you get your college assignment you won’t know what kind of room layout you have. Just wait. You need to discuss these things with your roommate -suitemates.

That said, if you have a large common room like DD had in Hanzen, then there would be room and no one will probably care as long as there is room for seating and the TV and frig and everyone wasn’t looking to put a wardrobe in, too. We got DD a wardrobe from Ikea last year when she moved to her apartment. It had to be put together but it was a reasonable price.

You might also start figuring out how to reduce the amount of clothes you have there at any one time. You don’t have to take everything you own with you, only what you need for each season.

of course I’d be considerate of my roommate and I was only going to get it after I moved in and if he thought that it was okay.

Also remember that you are going to get a decent amount of shirts over the year…you already get 2 during O-week(o-week shirt and athletics shirt)…a third if you do outreach day.

Yes! What’s with all the free t-shirts? Everytime I talk to my daughter on Skype (video), our conversation starts with my saying, “Is that another free t-shirt you’re wearing”? (-:

If I have any advice for you, it’s that you don’t bring all the clothes (and stuff in general) you’re thinking about bringing. I brought almost all of my clothes, and I only ended up wearing 2/3 of them. Seriously, when you’re packing in August, before you put each item in your suitcase/box/trunk, ask yourself how often you honestly wear/use it. If you have some really cool shirt from a concert you went to sophomore year, but it’s too crazy or doesn’t fit well, resist the urge to reminisce and leave it at home. You can bring an extra dresser/wardrobe with you, but you’ll want to maximize what little space you’ll have. Less is more in dorm life. More importantly, you’ll be thankful when you’re packing up at the end of the year. Packing is not fun, and the less you have, the sooner its over. And if you don’t live nearby, the less stuff you’ll have to find storage for over the summer.

About the O-week welcome packet with info about our college & dorm rooms:
what if we won’t even be in the country (I’m going on senior trip with friends and then a family trip) and probably won’t be back until August. Will this information be emailed to us, or will me being out of the country be a problem?
Thanks all!

id advise extra furniture… especially if you like wicked sick setups.

My single right now has (other than standard furniture) one futon, a second desk, a second chest of drawers, and three bookshelves.

Totally makes the room better

I’ve heard that anything that needs to be filled out will be available on-line but I’m not sure about the rest of the info. I wonder about this too but I am requesting a change of address to my mom’s house where I’ll be over the summer.

Christine–we were out of town last summer when my daughter’s packet arrived. It’s a lot of information, and it’s not emailed to you. Is there someone who pick it up for you and get you the most important stuff by phone or email? I remember there was quite a bit that needed to be filled out and submitted (though that could be done online, I think), including sending photos, and I don’t know if those forms were emailed or arrived in the packet with all of the college info, but the packet will definitely contain information about what college you’ll be in and who your roommate is, so you might want to have someone open it for you and tell you what’s there.

yeah, the O-week booklet and roommate forms etc. are mailed You could email Rice admissions and see if they can send everything electronically

Oh, crap. International nightmare. Current mailing address in China, will be in Ecuador visiting my dad and my brother from my other mother and my grandmas and whatnot. in the summer. I think I’ll just call them and get them to send it all to Ecuador; this is okay, right? Le sigh…

yeah. I was travelling as well. had all my mails sent to my aunt in Boston. Its real easy to change your mailing address. Just do it quickly

If you’re going to be away from your mailing address during the summer, then you can talk to your O-Week coordinators once you get your college assignment and get them to email you stuff. They’re generally pretty accommodating.

I was a coordinator last year, and we emailed the O-Week book to all of our international students (so that we wouldn’t have to pay for shipping — we gave them a hard copy when they got here).

Uhoh, I’m actually not even going to be in the country either, just like markos.alejo~

I’m just going to call Rice and tell them about it (thnx Ant. and NYS), and see if they can change my mailing address so that I can pick up my stuff at my aunt’s house in Ecuador. I’m pretty sure they can send it anywhere you will be (hotel, relative’s, etc) as long as there’s a physical address. :Omg, total dilemma : ( If anyone has ever lived in East Asia, you’ll know that there are stores with a bunch of amazing stuff that’d be perfect for any dorm (lamps with comedic inappropriate switches, giant chopsticks, funny phones, omg, so much stuff and the prices are so low, it’s crazy). I have limited packing space : ( Does anyone know if there are any stores like these near Rice, cause I might just end up stuffing my bags, but I’d kill myself if I found stuff near Rice exactly like the stuff I brought  I’m going to miss cheap East Asian useless crap :’ (

markos – it’s about a 20-minute drive from campus, but if you can find someone with a car, there’s an area known as Harwin Road that is lined with import shops with stuff like that.
