Wireless routers

Another question, if I might presume once more on the kindness of our seasoned parents. :)

As far as we can tell from the Furman technology website, wireless coverage does not include dorm rooms, only a few lounges in various dorms. My husband would like to know if students are allowed to install wireless routers in their rooms, and if so, if there's any problem using them (ie. too much interference?). We will call Furman and ask, but he wondered what students' experience with their own routers in the dorms has been.

Thanks once again!

They aren’t allowed. The reason is that students set them up wrong, and they screw up the whole network. Other than a computer (which has to be certified by FU Computing and Information Services) and maybe a printer attached to your computer, you can’t put any devices on the network.

Okay, thanks for the info! We figured that was probably the case.

She MIGHT get wireless in her room … it depends. My D was in Poteat, and she got wireless. Others on her floor did not, though. No one really quite knew why it worked the way it worked!

Interesting! She’s in Lakeside, so I wonder what the situation is like over there.

Thank you.

I’ve stayed in the Jusdon dorms and it was questionable whether you could get a signal. Some rooms didn’t and some did. For our room you could get it on my roomate’s side.
