Are you against Sports based Admission/Scholarships?

“Playing devil's advocate, you don't at all think that this attitude implies that studies comes a very weak second to athletics? I mean I'm all for athletics as a crucial part of education but do we really want to suggest that learning should be done in small pockets of down time from the game?”

No, let me give you a lesson in bear logic
A trip to Phoenix (Presidents Cup) and San Diego (Nomads) every winter is good for the soul and gets you out of the rain
If your coach yells tell them to stop
Give soccer 100% attention between the white lines then leave it alone until the next practice or game.

From my prospective
Academics a weak second? The bear is a math major doing premed and in the national honor society for freshman.

Well done Bear!:)

What I don't understand is why people are taking POIH -- who is clearly so out of touch with the subject being debated -- seriously.

^^^ Because most of them do think it is NOT appropriate to make Academics second to sports at institute of higher learning. But they lack courage to confornt the issue.

Not everyone can voice for change. Most try to accept things as it and go along.

QUOTE:
"Don't mix and match."

Sorry. This is the the preference of American universities, to mix & match. There are colleges & U's in this country where sports is minor or nonexistent. Choose those, then.

Having a variety of activities, including sports, including other e.c.'s, also draws people with great academics who want secondarily to do the e.c.'s while primarily doing academics.

"I certainly won't care once my D's in college."

LOL. :D: Nothing like honesty. Once she's in, who gives 2 figs?

holds sides

Hey, let's hear it for the end justifying the means...

I'm glad this site has, for the most part, run its course for me.

So I can say this to you without many worries:

You really need to shut the **** up.

ParentofIvyHopeful, I really disapprove of affirmative action. I think you should start a thread about that and amuse me with what you can come up with in a debate with some people.

edit: am i potentially unleashing a monster?

epiphany :"Having a variety of activities, including sports, including other e.c.'s, also draws people with great academics who want secondarily to do the e.c.'s while primarily doing academics."

I'm all for sports to be secondary with Acedemics primarily.
But if you go thru the post all the people who are shouting against the thread are for sports to be primaryfactor.

They think paying $5 Mil bonus to a coach is justified with paying $200K to Nobel prize winner professor.

What is the primary objective here?

Educating the future leaders of our country whilst making money.

"Educating the future leaders of our country whilst making money."

There are lots of ways to make money so you are saying that as long as the University makes money it should be allowed to indulge in that activity.

Abso-effing-lutely. As I said, they can do whatever they want whether you agree or think it's fair. There's nothing you can do about it either.

I can just try to raise the concern I've. University can help Iran build Nuclear reactor and make tons of money.

You will not be bothered as they can do whatever they want.

I have no idea what the hell that says...

"I can just try to raise the concern I've. University can help Iran build Nuclear reactor and make tons of money.

You will not be bothered as they can do whatever they want."

I could not agree more with the person who told you to "shut the **** up!" Learn how to speak English so people don't have to pull out their "Idiot-to-English" translation books.

Sadly, POIH, I would have agreed with before reading your posts in this thread. I didn't think "Higher institutes Of learning," should give athletes any special admissions boost. Honestly though, I had never really thought about the revenue, alumni support, etc. sports generated. Now I disagree with you, and your complex "logic" that only you can understand. One thing I did Learn from you Though was To capitalize Random words in Every sentence.

I find it funny how you bring everything back to the Olympics. If research is so important, though, shouldn't we quit sports altogether? Or should we focus on athletics so we don't lose to "lowly Greece." Pick a side.

You make it sound like students take up sports just to get into elite schools. Playing sports in college is ridiculously competitive. See if you can find information about students playing college sports from your daughter's high school. I know from my school, we generally send about 20/300+ students to college for athletics. About 5 of those are D1. Unless you are naturally gifted at sports or started playing in elementary school, you WON'T play college ball. I don't think many 3rd graders are too worried about Ivy League admissions.

You also claim that inventing Google/Intel is the only way to benefit society because it provides jobs and makes people rich. Sports provide many, many people with jobs.
architects for stadiums
maintenance workers
agents
managers, coaches, trainers, etc.
If you want me to get really specific
ESPN and all of it's employees
all other sports newspaper writers, radio hosts, broadcasters
casinos (or wherever you bet on the games)
even the people that control little league and other kids' sports
video games, the designers and everyone that works on the games

I'm sure I'm forgetting thousands of other jobs. The point is that sports not only provide entertainment, but jobs for millions of people.

Your views are not bad POIH. The problem is the way you approach this forum.
Here is a simplified version of your "logic":
1.) Post on an anonymous internet forum declaring your views, asking for responses.
2.) After you read the replies, you reply to the people that agree with you, thanking them for their support.
3.) If someone opposes your view, you either A.) ignore them or B.) Tell them they do not understand your advanced logic.
If B.) You either a.) tell them they are accepting the common publics views and can't think for themselves. or b.) tell them that you have done advanced research and are qualified to talk on the given topic.
4.) Continue to enforce your view no matter how badly people are ripping you, your logic, and your view apart.
5.) If all else fails, conclude with "You people don't understands my views. I am endings thisss discussions likes a gentlemans. GoodBi." or something along those lines.

I'm not really sure why I bothered typing this whole thing out because you will just pull a 3A in your simplified logic system. (refer to the above chart, if you don't know what 3A is).

Oh yes and one more thing. You claim not to fall for the common publics view on anything, yet you refer to the USNews College Rankings as your bible. Those rankings are about as mainstream as you can get.

I would just like to end this post with a little series of posts
POIH- "Have a life and leran something before opening mouths. Same goes for losobos1."
POIH- "When a Simpson or Kobey Bryant become rich What they do is anyone guess."
Loslobos71 - "Kobe didnt go to college..."

:) (10 chars)

haha very funny and entertaining.

^^ and that is exactly why I do not want POIH to shut the ____ up. His posts are immensely entertaining, as are the ensuing discussions.

everyone, please ignore this user. It's best to not give this whiny biotch any attention... That way, when she wants it, she won't get it, and will slowly disappear.
