Are You Motivated by Yourself or Others?

So, fellow CC overachievers, I was wondering whether:

You excel in school due to self motivation.

You excel in school due to pressure/motivation from parents, friends, peers, etc.

Number 1 definitely

Well a little bit o both. I want to do well for myself bit at the same time I’m competitive so seeing my friends do better then me makes me push myself harder.

Number 1

Sent from my iPhone using CC

I’m self-motivated to do well for myself and to compete with others.

Umm…mostly 1, but a bit of 2 as well. A couple years back I was really lazy and what got me back in my game was my friends and competition with others.

2, all the way! I blame my ,go big or go home personality.

x2. I have both self-motivation and a competitive streak!

I am unmotivated.

I motivate myself, but am inspired by others. :)

Anyone who doesn’t pick #2 is lying to themselves.

2 most definitely, with the exception of athletics lol

Number one mostly, with number two being people who inspire/motivate/push me to “be better” to further pursue #1.

agree completely with tigerb^

Number 1 mostly. But number 2 comes in when I see someone else do good, and I’m like: ‘hey, I can do that too’.

I’m naturally a perfectionist, but a lot of it also has to do with people’s expectations of me as the “genius girl”. Also, the bragging rights plays a huge part lol.

100% number 1. Attending a high school with a 60% graduation rate and sports teams that are lucky if they win one game out of twenty a year really makes me want to do well and succeed in school and life lol. Especially since there’s about 4 other high schools all less than 20 minutes away that send an average of 5 kids a year each to top 20 schools and win state championships yearly…

I guess that could also be considered 2 though…

I would say number 1. I wish my parents motivated me. I’ve become too dependent on them. Seriously, my parents probably wouldn’t even care if I lived with them the rest of my life. That’s problematic. I envy all these Asian kids whose parents force them to succeed.

I motivate myself much more than anyone else ever could. I have an extreme Type-A personality that lends itself to never losing. I set standards for myself (normally ludicrously high) and become frustrated whenever I am unable to achieve these invisible goals.

Though, when other people do better than me it really bothers me, so I guess part 2 plays a small role.

I’m a mixture of both. For one, I always look at things I do, and feel like I can do better. There are times when it feels like no matter how good I do, I’m not living up to my full potential.

And then I see people around me doing better, who I am just as smart as (if not smarter than) more involved with school, with better grades, or test scores, and it makes me feel like I’m not tapping into my potential. Or trying enough.
