Argentine going to UNC

Hi people!

I'm currently a third year student studying IR at a university in Argentina. I've been accepted to study at UNC Chapel Hill for the spring semester of 2014. The thing is that nobody else got accepted to study at UNC from my university and that is why I'm a little bit nervous. I'm going to be by myself for five months and that is something new to me, so I hope someone could help me with some questions about life at UNC.

First of all, what is your advice on the housing issue? I was looking for a private room. I thought that Granville was the best option due to the closeness to the campus and the amenities but then I read some bad reviews about the place. Is the place really that noisy?

Secondly, is it easy to fit in as an international student? I'm asking these because I know how big the university is and also because I'm not very familiarized with the way in which social life works in a college town. There is no such thing in Argentina! haha

So these are my main concerns. It would be great if someone could help me with some info or personal experience!

Thanks in advance!

I know you’re not British, but this thread should help:

I’d suggest looking through other threads about international students as well.

Even though I will be a first year student this coming year and don’t know from first-hand experience, I don’t think you should have much trouble making friends. Plenty of transfers come to UNC and assimilate and it seems like most out of state students come here without knowing anyone else. Coming for just second semester is different, but you really should be fine.

My father is from Argentina (Buenos Aires) and people loved his accent when he came to the US. Until he opened his mouth, you couldn’t tell he was a foreigner. I suspect you’ll have similar experiences.

Enjoy your time studying abroad at UNC!

Welcome to the club. Canadian transfer here
