I was accepted to Brown University under the early decision plan, and I kept my academic record throughout the year (maintained a 4.0). However, I was arrested last week for posession of mushrooms...which is a felony. I have a trial in August about 2 weeks before freshman orientation. So, I have two questions: (1) Do I have to tell Brown? and (2) If so, will Brown rescind my admission because of this?

Many colleges ask GCs to include info about arrests/suspensions/expulsions in the final GC report and final transcript, which are sent after you graduate from h.s. If that was sent before your arrest, you may be in the clear. If not, you may be at very high risk of having your admission rescinded. My guess is that before deciding to rescind your decision, the college would ask you for an explanation of the charges.

Tiberius, I'm not addicted to anything. Trying drugs was a one time thing for me... as it is for many teens... I'm just different because I got caught. It was a stupid, stupid mistake.

Northstarmom, thanks for the help. So if the final report was sent before my arrest, I don't need to tell Brown myself?

If someone were in college and got caught for the same thing would they ever kick that person out? If not, I don't see any reason why they should rescind someone's admission for this. I don't know nearly enough about this to know what could happen but I don't see what the difference is between getting caught now and 4 months from now.

Many teens do try these things. I know a best friend of mine, whom I'd never would've thought would do pot, and he started to do so. I don't think he does it often, but he has done it once in a while. Now, I'm not gonna do it, but I can understand if this guy wanted to experiment with it.

Look, if it's his first ever time being arrested, then he may not get recscined. But if he has a prior history of being arrested for other things like DUI or whatever, then worry.

But yea, it's a concern seeing as how Brown is a high institution.

Time to sit down with the DA and cut a deal. Deferred adjudication with community service maybe??? Get a good LOCAL attorney and be prepared to make a nice campaign contribution to the DA :)

Sound advice. Get yourself lawyered up NOW. Ask around for the JD who does cases for college kids just like yours. Best of luck. Be honest, pay what is required and learn a lesson.

I don't know if you are going to be getting federal student aid, but I think if you get a felony drug conviction, it can affect that too. Good luck.

haha no one gets caught doing things there first time. Ive been arrested before...and it wasnt my first time even though i told everyone it was. Although i do not do drugs, very rarely i smoke weed, i drink like a fiend, but my first time drinking or smolking ever i would never have gotten caught. Now my chances haave increased drastically

Think about it: Would you want to room with someone who had been convicted of a felony?

I wouldnt mind rooming with someone with shrooms. haha.

This is a tough call because if you dont tell them, and they find out later...there may be reprocussions...but if you tell them then they might rescind. Just dont get convicted. ha.

Follow the advices from bandit and hazmat, get yourself a good attorney that specializes in this kinda cases.

Even if you get lucky with admissions this time, you will have to answer the same question when you file for fafsa next year; apply for internship; and apply for graduate school.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I just went to see a lawyer today, and he said he's going to try to get me community service and some kind of drug education program, perhaps avoiding a trial and an actual conviction. I just don't know whether or not I'm required to tell Brown about this.

I don't think you will need to tell them unless they have a form that asks for any expulsion/suspension/etc. I don't think being arrested is related to school, but I'm not too sure

I definitely feel for you- I was arrested for larceny, but got off with a very nice social work program... try for something like that- what state do you live in?
Also, are you underage?
From what i know, it seems to be a dont-ask-dont-tell policy with many institutions; that's what a policeman told me with regards to my high school ("we dont contact them, etc..."). I know you must be worried, but you are most definitely (from what i know) not required to tell brown. You may want to get a dummy email address & confidentially email another school with your situation. Just a thought.
I also know that mind-altering substances are huge at brown; were they to find out, they may not care that much. still, be careful obviously, and don't go telling people about it. These are just my impressions from experience. Dont take from them anything else.
Good luck, and i hope everything turns out fine!

Your best bet would be to avoid having a conviction at all cost. Even if you should plead no contest and get the community service/drug education, atleast it will not be a conviction (which FAFSA, your college and future employers will ask about).

good luck to you and I hope this all works itself out.
