Recently, I made a big mistake and ended up getting arrested with a drug charge and also got 5 days OSS and 5 days ISS. I wasnt selling drugs (and tbh i wasnt even using the ones they found; a few adderall pills). I am just worried about my enrollment for Florida State Uni… I paid the admission fee and everything, and I am all set up to go to school in the fall. My attorney says we can probably get my charges dismissed… but I am still worried. Should I choose a back up school? or Should I just wait it out? Please help.
How will the school know? Is there something that says you have to let them know if there are any disciplinary issues after acceptance?
I know someone who was in a similar situation (except it was during summer between senior year and freshman year of college so no suspension). His lawyer got the charges dropped and he did not tell the college. They didn’t find out and he is attending the college now. Not sure about the ethics of this but that’s what happened.
You very well may be allowed to enroll in your college. However, that is not the major issue. You were arrested on drug charges with penalties! To repeat, you were arrested on drug charges!!! You weren’t selling drugs so what triggered the arrest? Something cued the police to detain and arrest you. Why would you let yourself get in that situation? You weren’t using the drugs. Were they prescribed for you? If so the pills should have been safely stored at home and not floating around in your pocket. What is the permissible number of Adderall pills that you are allowed to have with you with and without a perscription? Your biggest problem in my estimation is not understanding that carrying a few pills with you and getting arrested on drug charges is a big deal that you personally must address before entering college.
You don’t need to tell the college about the drugs arrest. It’s not a conviction. So no matter what, you don’t have to tell them about the arrest.
The issue may be the suspension. Will this suspension be reported to FSU? Talk to guidance and find out. If it will, you’ll need to talk to admissions at FSU now to find out how this might impact your admissions.
I suggest you wait this out, unless the suspension will be reported to FSU. And that’s because if you have an issue with admissions right now at FSU, you will have an issue with admissions at your backup school as well. So wait it out, see what happens.
If FSU does end up needing to be told about this, you need to think about how you’re going to position it. You need to make sure you take full responsibility for what you did. If the pills were on you, or near you, why were you in that situation? How will they know that you won’t end up in similar situations in the future? What are you doing now to make sure that you won’t end up in those situations? You need to think about this, because you may need to discuss it with them, and they won’t be good with things that sound like excuses.
Have you been convicted of sale or possession? You may have to report it on the FAFSA
@twoinanddone
Actions have consequences. You’ve now closed some doors for yourself and you have to pick yourself up, choose a new path, and make better choices in the future.
Because of the OSS & ISS FSU will know about the disciplinary action & will probably require an explanation.
If your lawyer feels confident of getting the charges dismissed, and if your attorney has significant experience in this area of law & with this court, then you may well be cleared of all criminal charges, but the ISS & OSS discipline will still need to be explained to FSU.
