I'm thinking about writing about how my school's motto "encouraging greatness" is basically a load of bullcrap and about how i had to find it within myself and from the out of school activities i participate in. To do this I think that I would sort of have to talk down about my own school and how it is not responsible for my success. Of course it wouldn't be blatant and I would to not focus on my school/teachers but rather on me. Good idea or bad? :S

On your “greatness”? Hm, depends. Will you, or will you not, be identifying yourself as “ThaMan”?

I honestly don’t know, I haven’t written it yet. I think I’ll write it tomorrow and get some people to read it and see what they think.

Yeah, it sounds kind of arrogant, but that might just be a bad summary. After you’ve written it, ask some people to read it.

What’s the point of your paper? From your summary, it seems like your goal is to convince the reader that you had success as a result of your own hard work/decisions and not as a result of your school.

That seems like a weak primary motivation for an essay. It could definitely be something in play in your paper, but a whole paper on that seems boring, arrogant, and not worth a readers time.

Be careful when you talk down a school. In my opinion, it’s far safer and more meaningful to talk down the culture of American education.

I’d be careful here. Can you do it without sounding bitter or too negative?

i dont think this is a good topic.

Never badmouth anyone in a college essay.

Write it. College adcoms want to know who you truly are
