Art at the NA

Yes, i know i started sports at the naval academy yesterday, but this was another curious area of mine. Are there art classes available at the Naval Academy? We've been doing stained glass (copper-foil method, of course) in my advanced art class this year, and i'm officially hooked. I'm not good enough at drawing to qualify as artsy-fartsy, but i do enjoy the creative aspect of art. I've never seen any posts addressing this issue, so i would appreciate any input.

Ive been doing artsy stuff for a while, but i dont have enough of a drive to do it like totally, but its a nice hobby

I have a website with my stuff on it: www.colbybuss.com

I am also interested in this, what do you fellow knowledge seekers know about art at USNA?

Dude, the Naval Academy trains leaders and engineers, not artists.

You can pursue it as a hobby, and AFTER Plebe Year, but don't expect any classes on it, nor to be able to turn your room into an art studio, either.

totally agree!!

thats why ive swerved mine to be a hobby, so it dosent waste my time

My son loves music and is in the honor choir at his high school. If he gets an appointment, he plans on being in the choir/glee club. He finds it to be relaxing and very satisfying. It helps his mind .body.soul just like his weightlifting does. The arts are important for many people. Perhaps there is a club where you can pursue your artistic interests.

thank you for your understanding. i'm sure i'll be able to find a creative outlet somewhere at the Naval Academy (although that is definetly not at the very top of my priorities list, it would help with the stress that i would assume builds up over the year)

Yea, I'm a decently talented at charcoal and graphite and a little paint and wondered the same thing. I would never want to major in art or even take classes or anything but wondered if they had some sort of extra curricular. It's a nice stress reducer when I can't go work out.

If you have a talent in the area of arts, why wouldn't you want to take a class to develop this talent. It is as if you all are ashamed of your "artsie" talents. Don't be. Glad to hear the oregon son will pursue his musical talents.

ummmmm i think the closest you'll get to art is if you're in the company that paints tecumseh for football games. plus there's a literary magazine, the labyrinth, where you can submit poetry, short fiction, and visual art.

band, choir, glee club, editor of reef points, to name a few more...

Wheelah -- thanks for your "reality checks" on these threads...

These kids have to know that to go to Annapolis means being committed to being a future NAVAL OFFICER...the USNA is not the typical college experience...

I know of one young man who got an appointment, was part of the football team, then left after a few weeks because he "didn't realize that the Academy was all about being a Naval Officer...thought all (he) was going to do was play Div. I football."

BTW, following your interest, even as just a hobby, will be near impossible during Plebe Year.

I suspect the closest you'll be able to get to it will be to set up your things at your sponsor's house...

I'm not sure what you are trying to say, but you can be a naval officer and like the arts....I know of a young man who went to the naval academy to be an officer and changed his mind after a few weeks. Just didn't like it.

What I'm trying to say is that USNA is not an art school, nor does it have any classes in art.

If you want to study art, go to Juliard. People who go to USNA (or any other Service Academy) are looking to be the next Halsey, not the next Michaelangelo.

Now, are there Mids with an interest in art? Sure! I'm sure there are tons of artists who like to read Tom Clancy novels, too, but expecting that USNA has an art program (or even being worried about such foolishness when he hasn't even gotten there yet) is less than smart in my opinion.

It never ceases to amaze me the creativity I see every time I pass Techumsuh and see him all "decked out" for whatever occassion is at hand- one of my favorites was the Lucky Charms Lephrachon for the game against ND! And who could forget Mario Brothers for the Maryland Game! Gladiator for Army!

And then there are all the spirit spots that the mids produced for the Army-Navy game- they were incredible!

Oh- and the paintings that "appear" overnight in T-court, to the delight of all the plebes that get to release a little anxiety...and dare we say, frustration!

How about the Halloween costumes- or the Halloween concert in the Naval Chapel?

Granted, there is little time in a Plebe's life to enjoy everything one might want to- and I don't see any art classes offered as electives- but it sounds like these multi-facated kids find creative ways to display their talents- all while learning to be fine leaders and officers- and good for them that they can!

(oh- lets not forget the photo's riding Bill the Goat in the all-together after loosing one's a$$...) .....and just look at some of the photo's on the Navy's site taken by officers/sailors from the deck of those ships at sea- they are spectacular!

It is not fun and games- far from it from what I hear- but even with that, look at the artwork Zaphod's buddy did for the Dark Ages.......
so while the focus is on all things military and academic and athletic, sounds like with a little creative planning, you might just sprinkle in a little fun here and there! At least that is what a parent hopes for so that it is not all doom and gloom!

lol i doubt being the "editor of reef points" is a highly artistically stimulating experience.

Sorry zaphod, I was referring to Mammasparrow.
When even English majors graduate with a BS degree, I think it is obvious that Navy does not have an art program. I don't think anyone here wants to major in art, I am just letting them know that there are opportunities to participate in "artsie" type activities...even as a plebe.
Did you know Halsey was an awesome musician...on the side...

ColbyBuss,
you are GIFTED! If you end up at USNA, your company is gonna have the best boards! Many mids are talented in the fine arts, and diversity one of the great aspects of the Academy!

okay wheelah-I will give you that one. I guess editing Reef Points just doesn't compare to the stimulating experience of painting Tecumseh...

Beam-
I don't really want to take classes in it because it won't pertain to what I do in my future. I have no interest in being an artist, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it occasionally. There is no possible way I'm ashamed of art, I will be in AP 2D next year, I just don't make it a priority.
