I’m going to be applying to colleges this fall but my extracurriculars are very art-focused. I’ve been going to art classes for years, got a few awards, and even took AP Art and got a 5 on the exam. I like doing art, and I have been doing it since I was really young. I wouldn’t mind minoring in art, but I don’t think it’s something I want to pursue in college. But I feel like art is the most dominant thing on my application, and now it feels like I have myself backed into a corner and I’m now forced to major in it. I was wondering if there was any hope for me to major in something else, or if I’m just completely screwed.
No you are not screwed. Yes you can major in something else.
Paint your essay with your words being the brush… Creative kids do well in life. Find something you like to do and apply a creative way (artsy) to do it. It ca the be just about any field. Counselors are good at helping with this.
You absolutely don’t need to major in art. For many colleges, they will still value your art accomplishments regardless of majors, at least those that are “holistic” with admissions.
I strongly suggest that you submit an art supplement with examples of your work (doesn’t have to be a full portfolio), an art resume that includes art classes, AP class, awards, and finally, letter(s) of recommendation from art teacher(s).
You do not have to be an art major to submit an art supplement. (Some schools, like UC’s, don’t accept supplements but most do).
You can also go to the visual arts major forum here on CC. You do not have to be an art major to use that forum.
ps Not sure if you would be interested in a double major or even double degree. Sounds like your preference is to major in something else and maybe do art on the side, which is also fine.
