Art requirement (admissions ?)

Hi, I go to a Catholic school in the suburbs of Chicago. Here, all of our fine arts classes are one semester (we receive 1/2 credit, which fulfills the school's requirement for graduation of .5 credit).

I want to be a nurse and I am considering UCLA for its nursing program. I was looking over the admissions requirements and it says:
(f): Visual and Performing Arts (VPA)
dance | drama/theater | music | visual arts
1 year required - A single yearlong approved arts course from a single discipline: dance, drama/theater, music, or visual art.

We don't have single year long courses. I only took a 1/2 of year (Photography I, and there is no Photo II anymore) during my sophomore year.

My question is, am I unable to be considered for UCLA because of this?

you can try to take a course at a local community college. That would finish the requirement.

I think being in choir or band counts as a year long music class (assuming you’re in it for a year)

Oh, you’re right. We have choir and band as one-year classes. Wasn’t in those. Well that’s OK, I was just considering UCLA.

Son interested in UC system for college. Does one year of mechanical drawing in H.S. (incl.autocad) satisfy the arts requirement? Also he’s in a band (not in H.S.) that plays mostly locally, has first CD coming out soon. Does that satisfy. I mean most of his gigs are paid performances, he just doesn’t want to do music (i.e. band) in H.S. because he thinks it’s lame.

Assuming your son lives in CA, use this website to determine whether a particular course at his high school meets the fine arts standard (or any other standard for that matter): https://doorways.ucop.edu/list/

If it’s not a certified class that he took for a letter grade it’s not going to count.
