does Penn consider any art work or artistic talents?

Did you send in an arts supplement?

Depends what your intended major is.

I have a quick question about the arts supplement. Can we send in just samples of our work without a letter of recommendation? I don't plan on pursuing an Art major at Penn.

@c0026, depends, what art are you talking about?

of course they consider art work or talents! they want to see that you've done something with yourself other than study all day, and they love to see a dedication to your art form. i don't think it matters what your intended major is. whartonites and CASers alike can be good in the arts. it's still equally impressive.

i sent in my music CD without a letter of rec, and i'm gonna major in music (well, double major.). i think you're fine.

@ crystal

Thanks so much! B/c the stupid common app supplement is hell. So I should just send in my photographs? (i do photography) To the undergraduate admissions office?

Are you an applicant this year?

Thanks.

omg i know!! i had no idea if i was supposed to just put in an mp3 online or something.
my mom dropped off my arts supplement in the undergrad admissions office, so yeah, you should just send it there. i think you should find out if they want digital files or print files and see if they have any specific requirements. i think for music, i had to do one classical/baroque and one romantic/impressionistic/modern, and it had to be less than 10 min. also, be sure to do a resume.

and yeah, i'm an applicant this year. i did ED to CAS.

I'm into editorial design, so I sent them clips of the school paper, and one of my recommendations was from my newspaper advisor. My college counselor suggested it because I could have just said that I'm an editor for a section of the newspaper, but my application would gain more if they could actually see my work.

I didn't do it as an arts supplement, but I wrote a cover letter, so einstein7th, if you're not doing it as a arts supplement just write a letter about what you've included, what it means to you, and how you might continue that at Penn. That's basically what I wrote. And at the end my counselor had me put "Thank you for considering this information when reviewing my application."

Oh in the envelope with the cover letter and the clips was a journalism resume. And my recommendation was through Common App, so it wasn't in there. Hope that helps.

A resume? hmmm, I thought the commonapp would cover that, I don't have much stuff other than what I put on the common app. What did you put on your resume, if you don't mind me asking. hehe. Thanks again - I'll submit my arts supplement (mail it in).

einstein7th, my resume included all the awards i won for piano, a list of all the instruments i play (too many. haha) and my experience with them.
i also included a solo repertoire list for piano and oboe, my two main instruments.
and i listed all the groups and summer programs i participated in.
and a list of all the teachers i studied with for my instruments, conducting, composition, theory, etc.

I applied to CAS and my regional rep told me not to send my portfolio in my situation. They told me the same thing at Yale. I think it has to do with the amount of materials they receive. I did bring some of my art work to my interview and the interviewer loved that I did that.

Quick question. What address do we send in our Penn Arts Supplement to? Is it the usual admissions office one? Or is it different, because I know some schools want it sent to a different address...

it's 1 college hall.

i sent in a music CD w/resume and rec letter. i think they're all required if ur going to use the arts supplement?

Hm, well last year I sent in a DVD of my dancing by itself (i.e. no resume beyond what was on my app, no rec letter) Don't know if policies have changed since last year, considering the other changes they've made (i.e. having an online tracking system, no Penn app, etc)

I'm in CAS, but have no intentions of majoring in the arts.
