Arts and Entertainment Business

I was wondering what opportunities there are to pursue Arts and Entertainment Business at Penn/Wharton. Are there classes in it? Integrated courses between the College and Wharton? Internship and recruitment in the field? Or is it too niche and speciality to get much attention?

Lots of graduates work in the industry, locally and in New York, California, and even Europe. Student arts organizations provide both performance and business opportunities. Career Services has a great alumni network. See theater department website and look at Penn performing arts organizations on university website. Also look at Kelly Writers’ House and Arts House (residence). Not sure about Wharton arts administration, but if you find a willing professor, you always can get an independent study.

hey Staller. I’m a wharton senior and i had an internship in the music industry after sophomore year. it seems that more and more, these firms are recruiting on campus, but otherwise there is a HUGE alumni network of people in hollywood/broadway/music. so yeah, you’ll have tons of resources.

as for classes: there is a great business class called The Art and Business of Film, as well as some stat/marketing related music classes (Peter Fader is someone to email about that), in addition to a broadway business class (not sure if that’s still going on). there’s also a great sports business class.

also, definitely get involved in related clubs. i was part of the Media and Entertainment club at wharton for the past 4 years and it was a great experience and provided some good exposure to the industry.

so yes, there are plenty of opportunities. apparently one of the major studios in hollywood has a floor in their building called “Locust Walk” because of all the penn alums there!

Oh thats fantastic. As of right now I’m in the college, intending to do PPE, but I hope to get a Dual Degree. The Music Industry has always been an interest of mine, but I was unsure if Wharton was the right place for Music Recruitment/preparation. Thats great to hear! The ultimate goal is to be a Music Exec.
