Arts scene at ND

What is the arts scene like at ND? I applied as a Film, Television, and Theatre Major and in some college guides ND is criticized for lacking a strong arts program. Does anyone know anything more about this?

I'm interested in transferring into FTT, and they don't require a portfolio...So that right there tells you something. I mean I'm sure it's a good program (it is Notre Dame, after all) but their program definitely is not in the same league as the programs at NYU, USC, UCLA, Columbia, and Syracuse.

Tim Robbins spoke last night at DPAC. Does that count as arts? His Actors' Gang is performing 1984 this weekend. And Actors from the London Stage are performing Much Ado About Nothing next weekend. And the Student Film Festival is this weekend I believe. And Citizen Kane is showing on Sunday. And Baghdad High on Friday. And Anton Juan is directing some show with butoh dance this semester (seriously, look up butoh if you don't know what it is). And Fortnight Productions' (they put on a performance in two weeks, naturally) Review is tomorrow (Friday). I think there is a Metropolitan Opera HD broadcast this weekend too. That's off the top of my head, some of the days could be wrong. As for non-performing arts, I can't really help you. Crowley Hall (the main music building) is certainly not at the standards of some other schools. The Snite Museum has some Italian drawings and Rembrandt etchings right now.

I must chime in on the arts scene since daughter is a double major in Music (vocal performance) and Science Pre-professional studies. We were so lucky to get to go to the Fortnight Productions show last night in Washington Hall. It was outstanding! The show, put together in only two weeks (hence the name...) was really wonderful. Other than this, I can say that the Opera Notre Dame group is another arts department that is growing and thriving. From the looks of it, there are certainly a large number of students with talent in the musical performing arts and sound!
