Hello! So, I've played cello for 8 years and I'm pretty good, but I haven't recorded an arts supplement yet and I'm honestly not very prepared right now. However, I think I could record a pretty good movement of a bach suite, which runs about 4 minutes. This is significantly below the 10 minute suggestion, so how will colleges view that? Will they like that I at least submitted something, or will they be disappointed that I didn't do more? I am NOT going to be a music major (I will probably be some sort of natural science major), but I would like to play in college for fun. I am applying to Pomona, Whitman, Oberlin, and Vassar. My top two choices are probably Pomona and then Whitman. Should I not submit a supplement at all, or should I put in something even if it's a little less than expected?

You could always fill in the slots with technical playing, rather than solo literature. Arpeggios, scales, etudes etc… anything is fair game, im pretty sure.

If you go to the Music Majors forum and do a search for “arts supplement” you will find many discussions of this, including one from this year with a similar issue from, iirc, a trumpet player. Good luck with your application!

4 minutes is fine I bet. They might even be charmed if you spend a few minutes just talking at the end of it all. It must be hard for those admissions officers to listen through a whole 10 minutes on each (even if it is quite beautiful). Go for it…It is chance to show who you are.
