Music Supplement Requirements - Loose?

Hey y'all!

I know that this depends on the schools themselves and how they choose to accept music supplements, but I was wondering if anyone knew how strict a lot of the schools I'm applying to are with supplements. For example, Yale and MIT ask for "less than 10 minutes" in for two pieces; Yale has an online submission thing while MIT is by email. So I have my two pieces planned out (big rep, lots to choose from), but it goes over by about 1.5 minutes.

Would it really be the end of the world if I gave them an extra 1.5 minutes of sexy classical music? I prefer not to send excerpts, simply because that's just not how I do; I've been told that sending excerpts is not recommended. I know that in listening to tapes, many institutions would just listen to the beginning, probably not get through the whole piece, then move onto the next one. I mean, it won't be so bad that MIT will say "OH NO this kid sent in extra music" /"tears up" application. I know it looks like I can't follow instructions, but I'm trying here. :( I can do a lot in 10 minutes, but I know I can do so much more in 11.5.

honestly, I’m a pretty accomplished flutist myself and I know from experience that 1.5 minutes is not going to make any major difference, so just stick with the guidelines to prevent adcom from getting annoyed. sure, the adcom won’t reject you for sending in an extra 1.5 minutes, but still. just stick to 10 minutes.

Just incase you have a particularly strict adcom I’d stick with the guidelines. Maybe make some cuts to your pieces if you still want to play both. Probably if you went over the worst that would happen would be that they stop listening at 10 minutes, but you never know.

If you can’t impress them in 10 minutes then an extra few minutes wont make a difference. Also, it’d be good for you to get into contact with each school to get a general feeling. My experience was that the Ivies were pretty relax about requirements but most heads of music departments requested a tape sent directly to them in addition to the one at admissions so if they liked it they could tell admissions even if admissions doesnt send them the tape.
