Arts Supplement

Hi CC! I want to submit an arts supplement to Dartmouth and they use the Common App arts supplement. I paint as a hobby and I'm pretty good (I've won awards) but I've never had official training or anything. I just do it. Anyway, the Common App seems to ask for a recommendation from an art teacher but I've never had one. What do I do?

You can type up a note and tell them you never had a teacher and submit it as the recommendation. if the supplement isn’t an integral part of your application (and it shouldn’t be really) I don’t think it seems like a big deal. call the admissions office and ask. I submitted a supplement and that part of the application seemed extremely laid back.

You could also consider taking your portfolio to an art teacher at your HS and asking them to evaluate it.

Or perhaps you could get an evaluation from someone who judged your work for one of those awards.

Hi there! I submitted an arts supplement, and had my recommendation written by my private art teacher. I think in your case, if it’s not too late, try to add an art class to your hs schedule next year and have the hs art teacher write one for you.

If that’s not possible, still let the art teacher at your hs evaluate your work and write a simple letter based on that. Perhaps provide him/her with a resume. A few of my friends did that at my school. Good luck!

Hi there! This is my first time posting–so please forgive me if I am doing this incorrectly!

I was also wondering about the arts supplement, but had a questions about submitting my pieces. The Common App asks for a website where they can see your artwork but on the actual Dartmouth site it asks for printed slides.

I am pretty sure I should follow what the actual site says, but am not sure whether there are guidelines to printing the slides (size says full page–full page w/ borders, w/o, etc.)

Thank you for your input!!

I asked Dartmouth during the live Q & A session…They only review your work, not the recommendation, as per the website says:

They do not say they evaluate your recommendation. Good luck!
