As Class of 2015, what should I be doing right now?

I have done NOTHING for college applications. What do I even do? I literally don’t even know what I should be doing.

Well the common app opens tomorrow. Start by making an account.

@AnnieBeats Do I need a password or something from my guidance counselor, ala Naviance?

Nope! You can do it on your own

One thing that I wished I did before doing applications is to write a list or “resume” of the things you’ve done in high school (awards, jobs, internships if you had them, ec’s, courses and AP scores, interests). I didn’t write it out and ended up forgetting to put a few really important awards that meant a lot to me. I don’t if it hurt me in the end, but it still would have been nice if I had squeezed them in.

You should have taken the SATs/ACTs by now. If not, sign up for them and start reviewing.
Did you take the PSAT? What score did you get?
Talk to your parents about finances. How much can they afford a year toward college?

Go to college search engines like Super Match linked here or the one on the College Board website and think about things like:
Do I want a big school? Medium? Small?
Do I want to live in the city? suburbs? rural?
Where in the country do I want to live?
What might you want to major in?
Enter that info and your GPA/SAT scores and get some ideas.

Also include in that the finances. If you have a great GPA/SAT score, then consider schools that offer merit scholarships. If you are pretty good, take a look at your state school.

For your major, you might not really know. But if you like math and science, you might want to consider schools with engineering. If you prefer history and writing, a liberal arts college might appeal. If you have no idea at all, then a school with a large variety of options (liek your state school) might be good.

If you can this summer, go visit some of those colleges. See if you really like that big college. Does all the opportunities/school spirit interest you? Or do you feel lost with all those people?
Or

Like another poster said, create a “resume” of all the things you have done for extra curricular activities…sports, jobs, music, clubs, volunteering, community service, etc. Try to remember when you did them and how many hours for each of them (even it is 1 hr/week for school year)
If you do have a Naviance account then they have a tool in there to review.

Create an account on the Common App.
Check out the essay topics. Start thinking about the topic you want to write about.
If you can, have a draft of it ready before school so you can review with your teacher.

Also, try “college search” subforum…this is for looking back not looking forward
