Asian Males at a disadvantage?

Now I know UConn has an average GPA expectation of about 3.5 GPA. I have a 3.5 GPA. But since I'm Asian, will they expect more from me because of affirmative action? Will they expect higher grades and higher SAT from me? Am I at a disadvantage for all college admissions?

Sigh, sucks to be Asian... well for college admissions at least

It’s something you have to face and tough out.

In actuality, this might give you a better chance. The bigger the pool, the more of chance you have to stand out. It could really work both ways.

first of all you should just have added this in your other thread (: double threads get kind of annoying because people look at yellow icons and think “YAY FIVE FRESH THREAD” when two of them are on the same thing XD or that’s just me.

you’re in-state, right? honestly i’ve never even heard that uconn has any selective admissions process, and the fact that you’re asian shouldn’t deter you from getting into uconn. but most universities with what I"m assuming would be less than 50% acceptance rate do factor in affirmative action quite a bit (if you’re asian, the general idea is your SAT score -150 points is what universities view it as, whereas hispanic or black people are +100 points. i’m not making this up btw XD) but even if uconn has a 40% acceptance rate, you’re in-state which makes it that much easier to get in lol

hope my rant helped?

Yes I am in-state, so I pay half the cost for attending UConn. And my mom has a friend who’s the director there, and he made a deal with her saying that if I got a 2200 SAT then my tuition would be free, although I still have to pay for room & board, etc.

By the way, is it really easier to get into a college that’s in-state?

well think about it. even in terms of geographic distribution in private colleges/unis, a lot of them are like 40ish % instate and then maybe 40% out of state (which means all the other states except yours) and then 20% international. there are only so many people in one state =/ that’s why the UC system, in certain UCs, might be full of people from california that might not be as bright as the ones out of state, because out of state students faced a more selective admissions process.

i would say get a 2200 SAT! that’s a nice deal :)

but there’s not much we can do about it, so it’s better to suck it up and work harder.

Yup since youre asian you need atleast a 6.0 to get into any college anywhere, it just works that way.

^ lol

10 char

wait why is this topic only addressing the asian males? how about the asian females?
=/

Asian males tend to look more similar to each other than asian females, so they generally seem to have a tougher time when it comes to getting into top, elite schools.

As long as you make yourself stand out, you’re fine…whether you’re African American, Hispanic, Caucasian or Asian.

I think the idea of Asian males being at a “disadvantage” is a little overplayed. NO, we certainly do not benefit from affirmative action policies. Yet of the Asian Americans who make up a huge pool of applicants for the Ivy League, many of them totally MISS THE POINT when it comes to college admissions. Too many Asian American students have the scores, yet lack the “UNIQUE” factor with leadership positions and standout EC’s…that’s when we start hearing so many Azns get rejected from their dream schools.

Make yourself stand out, i think it’s that simple.

umm its uconn i think ur fine

i will now officially take a flame position on this issue

BURN witch BURN…SHUT the f UP…they only reason you’re complaining about affirmative policy is b/c you are frikin insecure, like everybody else…so SHUT UP and stop thinking that people look down on asians everywhere

jkjkjkjkjkjkjkjk i am kidding about the flaming (but i have made my point…i hate these threads now, even thgh i used to make them myself)
