Asian way of studying SAT?

I just signed up for an SAT class and on my first day my SAT teacher told me that she was going to teach us how to become better test takers, but she also mentioned that most likely we wouldn't score that high. She is a white person, and she told us that unless we knew the secrets of the SAT that most Asian people know we would be stuck in the 1800 range. What is she talking about? What way do Asian people study for the SAT that make them any better? By the way, I immediately got a refund and left.

Dedication.

Opps. Sorry for spilling the secret.

Thanks, I just don’t get why an SAT teacher would say that to her students, and she wasn’t even Asian. What else?

That’s hilarious. Congratulations on your refund.

Wait so I’m the only white kid not stuck in the 1800s? OMG!

Yeah I’ve resulted to studying by myself. When I left early my friend told me later on that the teacher believed that Black students can get no higher than a 1600, did I mention that I am black?

I snorted water out of my nose reading your post. Was she telling you all of this with a straight face?

The (ex-)secret Asian way of improving scores: GOH PLA-KA-TIS TAY-KING MOAR ES-EH-TEES. Really, it’s as simple as that, though refreshers on grammatical rules and some math concepts may not hurt in various cases. Also, use that refunded money to buy yourself a copy of the official blue book and focus on using it above other third party sources.

Just for clarification purposes, I am Asian and have the ability to use a terrible Asian accent on command.

It’s called work ethic. Since Asians have more on the line when it comes to college admissions and flat out care more about education, they will work hard to get good scores. Many asians(including me) who are parents of immigrants find that life’s successes aren’t given on a silver platter but achieved through hard work. Asian find that work to exist in education.

Uh…why would any teacher say that? Students aren’t going to want to study with a teacher who doesn’t think they’ll ever get good scores…

hahaha thank goodness you got a refund.
White people definitely can score just as high (if not higher) than asians on the sat’s. At my school there’s usually one person in each grade who scores 2350+ and that person is definitely not always asian (and there are lots of asians at my school)

The key is to just take practice exams and put in the time. Good luck (:

Thanks everyone for your posts it really helped me @chewydog, yes she did say it to my face I was so shocked. Your secret way though I am a little confused… From what I’m hearing work ethic is the key. I got the blue book and I’m going through it, and it helps a lot.

I find your parody of an Asian person’s talking incredibly offensive.

@bunny2015 Read it out loud.

@IceQube That is why I added the clarification. I’m expressing sarcasm through pointing out the typical Asian parent mantra which my parents conveniently employed on me. Really, it is the secret Asian way technically.

OH MY GOSH @chewydog, I just got it. That’s hilarious! and to @Iceqube, calm down we are all in this together.

Yeah, that’s the secret Asian technique my parents used on me…lol.

Hahaha wow that’s incredibly racist. Just because you’re not Asian doesn’t mean you’re genetically incapable of scoring over the 1800’s…

Not only “can” they, but they also do. There are far more non-Asian high scorers than Asians, even in the math section where Asians score higher on average.

There are no secrets. Dedication trumps aptitude. Having access to plenty of past tests can play an important role. And, unfortunately, there is plenty of evidence that past tests might mean … current tests through the work of groups that have a different understanding of honesty. The location and racial composition of those groups are a public secret.

So in the end, the correct statement should be dedication and gamesmanship trump aptitude.

^ couldn’t have said it better. Its a test that can be prepared for to a large extent.

“Yeah I’ve resulted to studying by myself. When I left early my friend told me later on that the teacher believed that Black students can get no higher than a 1600, did I mention that I am black?”

Wow. So then am I not Black then? I got a 1950 on my SAT in my sophomore year. I hate ignorant people.

A spanish? guy at my school has a 2400. I believe he is the only one with a perfect. Some asians at my school have these scores. 2390, 2340, 2320, 2370, 2340. Many white people at my school have similar high scores and so do some blacks.

Honestly race doesn’t determine crap lol. But I do admit that part of the pressure to do well comes from parental expectations. Parents do influence their children a lot. Whether or not that has some correlation to race is beyond my scope of experience to make a credible comment.
