My son is interested in attending an academically challenging LAC and playing at the Division III level in his sport. He is interested in several NESCAC schools. How ethnically and racially diverse is Middlebury? Is there a critical mass of Asians and Asian-Americans on campus or do they feel isolated?

I just happened to have looked up the numbers:

African American - 3%
Asian American - 7%
Latino/a - 5%
N American - 1%
Intl - 9%
White - 76%

those stats are a few years old, Idad (and I think you knew that). Recent classes have been around 10-12% asian. The class of 2011 will be composed only 63% caucasian americans.

Those are the stats from the current USNEWS data. They were from the fall 2005 Common Data Set.

Common data set for 2006:

Asians: 10.5% (FY); 8.9% (all)
Black: 3.3% (FY); 2.9% (all)
Native Americans: .5% (FY); .6% (all)
Hispanic: 6.5% (FY); 6.2% (all)

It looks as though the common data set does not break out the internationals by ethnicity (they appear to be lumped together in a single category) so the percentages are probably somewhat higher in each category . .
