Hey guys i applied to UCI and UCSB where i got in as a Psychology major. I was curious as to how the Asian ethnicity is at UCIrvine mostly, but if anyone can reply regarding UCSB also it would be nice. I ask this because i have noticed in the past few years that out of the "Asian" ethnicity most are Koreans or Chinese and there are not so many Japanese. I enjoy the Japanese language, food, women, and the idea of joining a club. I am also worried that (not to be prejudice) due to the immense asian population the school will have a more studious environment and possibly be less social. Any information regarding these matters is appreciated!

Want a very social atmosphere, go to UCSB. Check out the Circle K club at UCi, it was ranked best club on campus and it is a Japanese culture club.

Im just worried that the campus will be dead-ish during the weekends due to commuters leaving. I really enjoyed irvine’s roads and surroundings, however it feels like the social aspect is something you are giving up partially for going there. I really did like UCSB and the friendliness of the people, along with the social aspect and environment. Its sorta difficult. im kinda leaning toward ucsb atm

visit uci on the weekend maybe…it’s just that at UCI you could have to seek out more people to get the “ins” to parties and stuff…at ucsb you would prob just walk into it. The people I know who went to ucsb are either in sororities or are party people.

Yah i hear ya. I just feel like both are good schools and its hard to choose. I personally am not a party person and am looking to maybe get into that a little. It seems to me that UCSB was more welcoming socially and appeared more of outgoing like. At UCI i felt that it had a bit more of a studious environment feeling to it with a focus more so on studying than UCSB. Im not saying people at UCI didnt seem like they were having fun but the UCSB vibe felt like it had a good combination of enjoying life, relaxing, and education .

I don’t go to UCI, but I did live in the city itself for 13 years starting from when I was 11. I don’t know what it’s like in that particular area around UCI, but the area I lived in was almost always dead quiet at night. Irvine in general isn’t a very social city. If you want to experience good night life, it’s best to go to another city.

Also, no matter which UC you go to, there will always be more Chinese and maybe Korean than Japanese. Even here at UCD, there isn’t a vastly huge number of Japanese students in comparison to Chinese or Korean students. I recommend trying out for the Jodaiko club if you choose to attend UCI. They’re a Japanese taiko drumming group and I don’t think you need any experience to join. I’ve seen their performances many times when I used to be in community college.

I don’t know if you can believe this site or not, but it states UCI has 6% Japanese. BTW, My nephew majored in Japanese at UCI, he also has an interest in Japanese culture. Of course, there is a much larger concentration of Chinese/Korean at UCI, but there are still Japanese people there.
