Asians at Barnard?

Thank you, all of you. <3 It's such a relief to finally know already -- my main concern now is keeping my grades up so that this one moment doesn't get destroyed. I've heard some really awful stories about students having their acceptances rescinded, and the last thing I want is for my experiences to be added to that file.

Good luck to all the RD applicants, and to the ED ones who are still waiting! May good news come your way -- I hope to see some (if not, all) of you at Barnard next fall!

Amalthea-
Would you mind posting your major stats for us RD people? It would be insightful :) Also...a girl from my school got into Barnard ED today and I'm afraid it's going to hurt my chances RD. Any thoughts?

Well, the only thoughts I have on RD chances come from the statistics my school posts at the end of every year. Last year, 2/2 ED applicants were accepted. 26 people applied regular, and of those applicants, 3 were accepted. I think it all depends on how many other people are applying, and what their stats are. Looking at your stats, though, I think you definitely have a good chance, even with the ED acceptance from your school. : ) Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

As for the stats...of course! : )

SAT I: 1400 (verbal 750, math 650)
SAT IIs: Writing - 760, Math IC - 630, Biology M - 690
ACTs: 32 (verbal - 34, math - 28, reading comp. - 36, science - 28)

GPA: 91.4 unweighted (about 3.6, I estimate?)
I took all honors and APs since freshman year - we do not weigh those.
Extremely competitive public school - school does not rank after the top 10%; I believe I was in the top 40% of the school. (Maybe top 30%.)

My major EC was volunteering at a school age daycare for latch-key children the past four years. I received a personal recommendation from my supervisor.
My other major EC was art club/various art activities, which included work being displayed at school art shows and creating scenery for school performances.
I have a few others, but these are the major two I placed the most emphasis on.

As for awards, I was in the National Honor Society for three years (it would've been four, had freshmen been allowed to be inducted), the New York State Science Honor Society, National Service Honor Society, as well as a few of those "national recognition" things (Who's Who, etc). I was published after my sophomore year for a poem I wrote; a lot of my recommendations emphasized writing. I also won a gold (10) and silver medal (11) during the two times I've taken the National Latin Exam.

Hm...I think that's about it. Hope it helps.

Wow...3 out of 26...that's not encouraging. How many people were in that senior class and is there anywhere I can see the stats? There are 5 applying RD from my school, including myself. I think 4 have a realistic chance of acceptance.

God I'm so nervous!

I think there were 263 people in the senior class. I don't think you can access the stats unless you have an account at the school website, but I'll copy/paste them for you to see:

It turns out I made a mistake before - there were 28 RD applicants, and 5 were accpeted. This list contains the 2 ED applicants, who were both accepted.

Don't lose hope! Remember that my school is a local one, and colleges try to enroll people from a wide variety of places, so it's not a surprise that a lot of candidates were rejected/waitlisted. Good luck!

Thanks for the info...no wonder so many applied from your school, I forgot you were in NYC. Just a question...are those GPAs unweighted, and do they only include the major courses (english, history, second language, math, and science) or all courses?

No problem! Those GPAs are unweighted. (We don't weigh grades.) They include all courses except physical education -- basically, they include English, math, science, social science, foreign language, art & music, and health.

Thanks Amalthea, I really appreciate your help. While my SATs are higher than all that applied from your school last year, I know they are not going to help me all that much as my average is only about a 93.3 unweighted, with all courses. However I do think my average is on par or a little higher compared to the other applicants from my school, and my courseload on par or higher than all of theirs also. I know I've got a shot, but how good I don't know and I hate this waiting game :(

I know -- I hate waiting. The minute I handed in my application in November, I just wanted to know what was going to happen, already.

I'm sure you know this already, but there is more to the admissions process than the GPA and SAT scores. : ) I'm sure you have some great ECs, and you have a great chance of admission. Good luck!

Thanks Amalthea...I hope you're right.

Wow...i think I'm the only one from my school applying to Barnard.

yeah me 2..does that help..only one applying from my school..

I think...being the only one applying from your school does help, but it's not a guarantee that you'll get in. Then again, all I have to rely on are statistics from last year's senior class, so you should definitely get a second opinion. (I'm probably not the person you're looking for to respond to these sorts of questions, heh!)
