Asians at Barnard?

Does anyone know of any Asian person attending Barnard?

What is his/her typical stats?
(Barnard’s my first choice, i have a solid rec sheet, but my sat exams are in the upper 1200’s…eh, I’m sorta scared of a thin envelope)

I don't know of any person in particular, but I know there are a good amount of Asians and your SAT scores would not be worse or better just because of your race. Yes, a 1200 is low for Barnard but if you get rejected for that it won't be because you are Asian.

About a fifth of Barnard is Asian. I also don't perceive Barnard as an "Asian magnet," like Berkeley or Harvard, so I really don't think you need to worry on that score.

It will depend on what else you bring to the table besides your SAT scores, which are in the interquartile range...but I don't start to have confidence until they're at the 75th percentile.

Heh, I don't have much confidence in getting into any of my other schools I applied to with the exception of my safety one, several blocks away from home!

I applied regular admission--financial aid is partly a deciding factor, so I'll be crossing my fingers until spring rolls around. Good thing to hear though, I thought Barnard was an "Asian magnet".

Kiki, I read your academic thread, and my mouth was hanging open. It definitely made an impression on me!

Here is a not so attractive quasi-list of me i can conjure up at the moment.
SAT 1240--second time
SAT II's--took in dec 04
3 college creds for psychology
8 college creds for biology
I've taken all AP and advance courses in h/s, but took only 1 ap exam and found out later it was a 3.
3.9 ave unweighted. rank 11 in a competitive class of 221, public school (last year, 2 students went to harvard, 1 to stanford, 1 to carnegie mellon, 2 to cornell, and some other selective places)

And I've started writng a hopeful novel, and have written 31 typed up pages so far.

Saysua-
Thanks for the compliment! I'm keeping my fingers crossed, I LOVE Barnard! It seems like you have a good chance too, your extracurriculars are very impressive :) Hopefully we will be classmates at Barnard next year!

Kiki

I think about 1/5 of Barnard is Asian. I was wondering the same thing awhile back (since I happen to be Asian, too).

Ah, both you girls (kiki81ny and saysua) have amazing profiles! Mine pales in comparison. And no, I'm not just saying that.

I applied ED for Barnard, so I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for the next week in the hopes of seeing a fat letter in my mailbox. At this point, I'm really, really hoping against hope that I get accepted. Mmrgh.

That was my little rant for tonight. Good luck to you girls, too!

Sayusa, your class rank is at the top 5 percent mark...if that was indicated on the form your counselor sent, that should help you. Of all things, I'm impressed with your job as a pharmacy tech...you never know what will strike sparks with an adcom but I like it, not many hs students work much. Frankly, I like everything except your SAT score and that's not much of a negative, it's just not a plus.

Have you had your interview scheduled yet?

And what other schools are you applying to?

Lady-
Thanks for the compliment. I hope we can be classmates at Barnard next year! I'm applying to a lot of schools but really, Barnard and Columbia are my first choices and I would be overjoyed to go to either. Keep your fingers crossed for me, and I'll do the same for you!

Kiki

I realized I typed “his/her” in my first post to a women college. My mind is getting frazzled from all this pressure!

Thanks, Kiki,
from reading this post and others from other threads I come by, you sound like an amazing person both inside and out. Imo, I’m pretty positive you’ll get into the college of your choice… Barnard, if it is your first.

Lady Amalthea,
think positive, I’m sure there is something(s) in you that the admission office would take note of, and you’re ED too for jeeper’s sake. I do hope all three of us get in and see each other next year! What are the chances of that happening?!

TheDad,
of all the posts, your post makes me feel the most confident. Well, just a nuance, that is.
About the interviews, I’m pretty much hanging onto that elusive strand called “faith” that interviews doesn’t count much or even against me, as I don’t have the transportation to NYC or to any other schools that are not within a 25 mile radius to my house. Summer would have been a better time for it, but summer has been long gone unfortunately.

Schools of choice are as follow
NYU
Vassar
UofR
Colgate
Hamilton
Syracuse

I probably should be adding more schools to my list for safety sake but the schools I do like are out of state.

Saysua-
I appreciate your kind words...I really hope you're right, but along with the rest of you I'm just in that perpetual state of anxiety right now. I've been looking forward to college practically as long as I can remember, and now that it's so close I just want it to be as amazing as I always hoped it would be. I really think that Barnard would be a place where I would thrive.

You have a very strong resume and I'm sure you will be in at a good number of those schools. The only one I can offer firsthand experience with is U of R as my brother is a sophomore there, and he really loves it, so it will be a great alternative if Barnard doesn't work out.

Talking to you guys really makes me very excited about the quality of the women I will hopefully meet at Barnard. I hope we can all meet in person sometime soon :-)

Kiki

Sayusa, I think you will get in at some of your schools...I just can't tell which ones.

Barnard does set up local interviews for the process--my D had hers here in SoCal in a Starbucks. When the interviewer found out after an hour that I was out in a parked car reading a book, she had D call me on my cell and invite me in to have a cup of coffee and ask her any questions I had...extremely kind and generous.

Kiki- Yes! I'm hoping for the same. fingers crossed I'm actually applying for quite a number of schools, too, but Barnard is my absolute first choice. A friend suggested it to me, and after doing research (in addition to several campus visits), I eventually gave it the title of "dream school." I hope we're both accepted!

Saysua - Thank you...I'm hoping my community service and essay stand out to the admissions office. The ED definitely improves my chances, yes, but I can't help but feel a little bit paranoid. (I'm driving my poor mother nuts.) I'll admit, thinking positive is a good way to pass the time. For all we know, we could end up being classmates at Barnard next fall.

Well, I just set up an interview at Barnard for this Sunday! I'm excited to finally get to tell them why I want to go there so much. Have you guys have interviews yet? Any suggestions?

TheDad,
Too late I'm afraid, I heard that they're no longer accepting any more interviews, I guess it's come what may, there's nothing I can do now.

Kiki,
Congrats, and good luck! I've not have one interviews, so this is beyond my scope.

Hm...I had my interview back in September. It was very nice and comfortable, and the interviewer didn't ask any questions that caught me off guard. ("What classes are you taking?" "What do you do outside of school?" - These two questions basically took up at least fifteen minutes. Or maybe I was nervous, and time passed much more slowly than I thought.) The only advice I would give is to simply be yourself and be enthusiastic about the whole experience.

Good luck!

Amalthea and Sayusa-
Thanks for your help. I'm nervous about the interview, I hope I come across as the ideal Barnard student, I really want to show that I am passionate about going there. Any suggestions about what I should wear? It's going to be cold in NY, and I'm taking the 8AM train down from Albany, so keep that in mind.

Kiki,
Here's an advice: Bring the enthusiasm with you and leave the butterflies and the anxiety at home (Maybe not a very realistic advice but get the mantra going!)
And I think you lived long enough in New York to know what sort of clothes to wear. But I suggest comfort, first and foremost.

After carousing around here and reading so many superb stats and such, I'm starting to feel less and less confident about myself, and more and more sick of accomplished people (not in a negative way, just simply "sick" of seeing em, trying to, but cannot avoid em) lol

Kiki-
Hm...I would go for something a little professional - but not too dressy, you know what I mean? I've heard people wearing business suits and such to theirs, but for mine, I wore an ankle-length skirt with boots, a boatneck sweater, and two pieces of jewelry. Nothing too formal, and it was comfortable enough for me to survive the subway. Just be yourself, and you'll be fine!

Saysua-
Ah, I know what you mean. I'm so reluctant to post my stats on here, considering the fact that they would pale in comparison to other people's. (Plus, at this point in the "game," there really isn't much of a point to it at all. Decision letters come next week.) Confidence starts to drain after awhile, heh. But there's always hope.

Thanks for your input Amalthea and Saysua. I think I may go to the mall on Saturday and try to find a decent skirt to wear, I don't have any wintry ones other than the black ones I wear for school concerts haha. I'm going to try to be confident and when they ask me why I want to go to Barnard, I will be ready :)

Are you doing one of the student interviews?
