Asians at University of Pittsburgh

Hi,
I was accepted into the Pittsburgh Nursing Program and am so excited to see what Pittsburgh has to offer.
However, I have one concern.
I am an Asian (Korean, to be more specific), and from what I’ve seen at Pittsburgh, there are not a lot of Asians there.
I am used to a bigger white community because I have grown up in a predominately white town, but I have always been closer to the Asians.
For those attending UPitt now, what is the Asian community like?
Also, I am interested in being part of the marching band; are there some Asians in band?
Thank you in advance!

My kids are half asian - ds did band and was in fact one of the few asians. He still had a blast but just so you know, probably fewer asians representing there. My dd went to Pitt also and actually took korean for a couple yrs. There are a few asian student orgs - both at pitt and also cmu. I know theres a kpop dance group if youre into that. Theres a good sized chinese christian group also - not my dds thing but she was invited to some events. Also - what needs to be said, lots of good asian restaurants - mostly chinese! And downtown in the strip is a great asian market. There’s a good representation of asians in grad programs as well.

@amyluke714 My S is Asian and in the nursing program. I know he is definitely not the only one, but it’s not something that is a concern for him so it does not really come up in conversation. I wouldn’t let this hold you back from attending one of the best nursing programs for undergrad. From what I’ve seen, there are a lot of different Asian countries represented on the Pitt and CMU campuses.

Hello!

As others have said, there a some really great student groups you can join on campus to find your niche. The Student Organization Resource Center has a directory of student organizations on campus. You can look through and find groups that share similar backgrounds or interests: http://www.studentaffairs.pitt.edu/sorc/

In addition to all of the great anecdotes and resources everyone else has shared here, I wanted to let you know that you can find enrollment numbers by ethnicity and even state/country of origin in our Fact Book: http://ir.pitt.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fact-Book-2016-3.pdf

Hope those resources are helpful!

Best,
A Pitt Admissions Staffer

Just spent the day at Pitt and our student rep was Asian and I feel like we saw Asian students all over campus. I think you would be fine.
