thanks frenchie. i just came back from orientation, and you helped clarify it at lot.

One more question about renting books. I registered for classes but how and when do I rent books? How do I know what book the course requires?

thanks frenchie. i just came back from orientation, and you helped clarify it at lot.

One more question about renting books. I registered for classes but how and when do I rent books? How do I know what book the course requires?

You don’t want to rent books. You want to buy them used online at half.com or amazon.com. It will be about 80% cheaper than the bookstore. You can find the books you need here: [Search by Course | Buy Textbooks | Bronco Bookstore](<a href=“Error - Page Not Found | Bronco Bookstore”>Error - Page Not Found | Bronco Bookstore) Although I tend to wait until after the first class meeting to buy my books because sometimes teachers will say it’s not necessary to buy them

any reasons for not renting any books?

Wouldn’t it be too late if I wait for the first day of class to buy my books? It takes time for them to ship. What if the professor requests that the books be in class on the second day?

It’s cheaper to buy the books online than it is to rent them. Plus you can resell them at the end of the quarter and then it’s a LOT cheaper.

I’ve never used a book in class this entire year. The closest thing I used was a lab manual and even then I only used it in one out of my three science lab classes (and I didn’t need it the first week). Your first day of class in most cases is kind of a “welcome to this class, here’s some basic info and the syllabus” day.

Another question, which class do you recommend for Area E? I saw a bunch but don’t know which one to take. Same with Area A1, which one do you recommend, Public Speaking or Advocacy and Argument?

The class you take doesn’t matter nearly as much as the teacher you take it with. Consult gradecalpoly.com or broncoreview.com for teacher reviews given by students. Seriously, you can take a class in your favorite subject but with a terrible teacher it will be a nightmare.

Well I had orientation on the 18th.
My class schedule(computer science) is M/W/F:
CS 141 10:30AM - 11:35AM
IGE 120 11:45AM - 12:50PM
MAT 115 2:15PM - 3:20PM

I think its good first quarter, didnt really want to take 2 hr classes or wake up too early. Opinions?

Not having any 8am classes is nice. Also, the MWF classes allow you to learn your material in less concentrated periods which is nice. Don’t be afraid to add another class if you find an open one with a good teacher. Three classes is a pretty light workload. Out of curiosity, who do you have for MAT 115?

It says “Staff” unfortunately so I do not know. I checked my professors for my other classes and there was no information on them atleast at broncoreview.com.

And yes my class load is low, I might add 1 or 2 classes because I actually want to switch to mech engineering when possible so im going to add classes that fufill both of these majors.

Hey, I’m a freshman applicant to Cal Poly Pomona for fall 2011. Recently, I found out on BroncoDirect (received no notification) that I was “declined after provisional admit”. I am currently trying to appeal this and is wondering what I can add to my appeal and what the chances are of my success. Thanks.

Fewjative: broncoreview is newer so it has a lot less reviews. Gradecalpoly was sold to koo fers which is a really annoying website but sometimes you’ll just have to bear with it. Just so you know, I believe CS 141 will do nothing for you in ME. If your math teacher switches to Xie or Wieqing (spelling?) do everything in your power to change.

Frizen: Raise 650 million dollars for the CSU budget so that they can stop cutting students. Sorry but it looks like you’re going to have to do community college and transfer to a 4-year later.

Thanks for the tips Frenchie17, and I need to take my core CS classes because that is the major I am in currently and there is no guarantee of changing majors due to the budget cuts that you have mentioned and impaction in engineering.

Btw, ever consider being an orientation leader?

i was wondering if u know anything about the process for “stafford workshop”?

robtheprincess - there is a link on your financial aide page through BrocoDirect. It’s an online “workshop” that you have to complete before they will disburse your loans. It goes over the process of the loan, interest, how and when you’ll start repaying, etc.

Chele

Frenchie -

A dorm question:

The “list” on the housing website says that mattress pads are provided.

We’re planning on getting an eggcarton mattress topper to put on the [thin] mattress. Is the pad that the school provides deep enough to cover the mattress AND the topper, or should we get our own mattress pad, too?

Chele :-)

Frenchie17,

When is the official move in day for people who are dorming? I heard it’s the day before school starts. I know about the Welcome Week program but I don’t want to pay o.O

lovevnc -

Move in is Wed., 9/21. And, you will be assigned a time to check in, so it could be late in the day. yikes

I know that Welcome Week is an extra cost, but it really isn’t too bad considering that they feed you & entertain you & you DO have the opportunity to move in without all of the stress.

It’s actually 3 nights extra and it’s less than the 2-night orientation!

Chele :-)

hi cppmom!

i have the “Stafford Workshop” in my “To Do” list for a very long time and I still haven’t figured out how to get rid of it!!

the msg from my bronco account says : "If you are a first-time borrower, and are planning on accepting a stafford loan as part of your financial aid package, you must complete an entrance workshop. A schedule of entrance workshops are available at

http://www.dsa.csupomona.edu/financial_aid

If you will be declining your stafford loan(s), you can ignore this requirement."

is the link above the link u were talking about?

& is that workshop same as the “Stafford Entrance Counseling” ?

hiya rob!

I apologize for not having all of the information when I posted the first time. I’m going through this with my son for the first time & was satisfied that I knew what was going on.

So, I discovered through DOING IT, that you can DECLINE awards right now, but you cannot accept any Stafford loans until September 5th. At that time, you will complete the “workshop” and then the funds will be disbursed.

This was on the page that I got to:

If you are a first time borrower at Cal Poly Pomona, you must complete the following to process your Federal Stafford Loans:

Indeed, the “Entrance Counseling” is the same as the “Entrance Workshop”. When my daughter went to college, she had to attend an actual physical 1 - 2 hour meeting. Be glad you can do it online!

Now, I do know that fees are due on Sept. 2, but if you have financial aid sitting in your account, they’re not going to hunt you down for payment. If you’ll have a balance to pay once the financial aid is disbursed, then that amount will be due. I don’t know what date that will be, but I think it’s some time after school starts.

I think they know how much a maze this all is, and they are able to help you though it. My son and I went to drop off some private/community scholarships last week & the people we met were very helpful. Granted, we were the only “customers” in the office, and it wasn’t crunch time, but at least I know their hearts are in the right place. :-)

Good luck!
Chele :-)

Thanks for providing me such useful information! !! !

(They should’ve just named them by the same name -_- )

I wish my mom knew as much as you! haha. Your son is an incoming freshman also?! Me too!! I’ve just finished my orientation on Wednesday, July 20th. Were you there?

Are you going to accept the award package that they’ve given you? I definitely need it!
I am also trying to fill out as many scholarship opportunities as I can online =/

Do you think the Direct Deposit option that they are offering is a good way to pay also? I personally have my own banking account, and I was deciding on routing it two nights ago, but I wanted to hear some thoughts on it first. Since you’re an adult, your thoughts are valuable. =]
