Ask a CPP student

You’re so sweet …

We did the first orientation: July 5 - 7. Brendan is PUMPED to start school. I’m a teacher & I go back to work on August 8th, so I have a feeling that he’s going to be driving me CRAZY for that month & a half that I’m at work & he’s still at home. Luckily, he has a car & most of his friends are going to UC schools & will also leave later. He is going to be doing some work for his dad, too, so that will keep him out of my hair. I understand, tho… he LOVES to learn and can’t wait for his next phase of life. He’s a Civil Engineering major … what about you?

My older daughter went to a TINY private college in San Diego, so muddling through the Cal State red-tape is a learning experience. I went to SDSU eons ago, and with technology so much has changed (for the better!).

Luckily for me (and Brendan ;-)) his father is paying for college. We had an amicable divorce & he promised that for the kids, so I am not doing anything besides coordinating. I, not him, have the patience to do so. My “end of the deal” was to make sure the kids got good grades & muster as many scholarships as possible. They both left high school with many AP classes/tests passed & some help from our community, so we’re all a good team! In any case, Brendan is taking the subsidized loans as his dad said that it will “feel good” … be an accomplishment … to write the checks to pay them off when he’s employed. :-)

Brendan’s little loan will be going straight to CPP with nothing “left over” to put into his bank account, so no need for direct deposit. Heehee. I think it’s a wise decision to do automatic deposits and payments whenever possible. Then, you never have to worry about finding the time to make deposits or write checks.

It’s been great chatting with you. I love “big kids” - it’s such an exciting time for you!

Chele :-)

Orientation went pretty well, but the weather was hot enough to cook an egg outdoor on the ground!

Oh… are you a teacher at cpp? I’d be pretty excited meeting you around campus haha
Will Brendan be living on campus? I will be, because my home is a bit far. I flew all the way to my orientation from SFO.

I’m majoring in Hospitality Management. Hopefully that will still be useful later on down this economy road.
(There were lots of engineering students at my orientation also!)

I am from a tiny high school and coming into such a new environment for college got me quite nervous haha.

I wish my dad would help out with our bills. For all these years, my mom has been playing the roles for mommy & daddy. =/
What kind of help did your community provide? I am thinking of taking as many GE at my local community college as possible during the summers because they are just way cheaper!

It’s been great trading msges with you also! You’re a helpful source to run to since we’re on the same boat towards all these process from CalState =]

No, I teach 5th graders. :-)

We live about an hour away (more with the usual traffic) from CPP, so Brendan will be living on campus. We’re from Temecula which is an hour straight north of San Diego.

Temecula has a foundation (that I’m now a part of since my kids are “through”) called Citizens Scholarship Foundation. Kids have to have a 3.0 & submit an generic application. The foundation then matches kids to donors, the donors look over the applications & decide on who they want to give scholarships to. Brendan received two based on his basketball experience & another based on his work with our church’s children’s ministry. Not a LOT of money, but better than nothing! :-)

I hope you’ll run into Brendan. He’s a great kid… very friendly & loves to meet new people.

I wish you much luck in your studies. If I wasn’t a teacher, I think I’d like to be an event planner, so I get your interest in hotel management! I also love to travel. :-)

Take care!
Chele :-)

Frenchie,
What exactly happens when I’m in wait list? Does the class still have seats?

i think when u’re put in the waitlist right now, in september, that is when ppl add/drop classes. also, on the first day of classes now, if kids don’t show up, the teacher will drop them.
i guess all u can hope for now is for ppl to drop the class that u want or they don’t show up on the first day. being on the waitlist is kinda like standing in line for something. if there is room, the prof will let u get in

When the classes are set to Staff Instructor, what happens?

From what I know, Staff Instructor means you won’t have a single instructor. A random professor will come teach the class everyday.

So when are we suppose to buy books? Is there a list of the books that we will need? Do we buy them before the class starts? What if some teachers don’t need books?

Sorry guys, College Confidential stopped emailing me when you guys posted replies =( Here is my mass reply to all of the posts that I missed:

Fewjative (07-21-2011, 06:56 PM): I live seven hours away from school so being an orientation leader would be a little difficult =P

robtheprincess (07-21-2011, 09:18 PM): Sorry but I’ve never heard of the “Stafford workshop” =( Although it looks as though CPPmom answered your question.

CPPmom (07-22-2011, 08:58 AM): The beds have a mattress and a “pad.” The pad is really just a layer you put on top of everything to prevent from staining the mattress. Just lay it on top of the topper and you’ll be fine.

Lovevnc (07-22-2011, 04:36 PM): I didn’t do Welcome Week but because me and my roommate were on texting terms he snuck me into the room the day before the official move in. I couldn’t get a key until check in though so I was kinda stuck in the room while he did the Welcome Week stuff. Welcome Week is a “funtivities” type program. There’s lots of informational activities which aren’t too much fun but it is nice to meet some people before everyone is trying to move in at the same time. I’m 50/50 on recommending it.

CPUser (07-25-2011, 09:31 AM): Every classroom has a limited number of permitted students set by the fire marshal for safety reasons. This number (usually) is the amount of students allowed to sign up for the course. When you are waitlisted that means that all of the spots have been taken and that you are hoping that someone who is enrolled is dropped so that you can take their place. Places are given in the order that people sign up on the waitlist. So no the class doesn’t still have seats. In GE or Support classes usually about 5-10% of the students drop or don’t show up to the first day of class. If you’re position 2 on the waitlist for a 50 student class you’ll usually get in. Just make sure that you go to the first class and talk to the teacher after class and let them know you are looking to add. You won’t be the only one but you have an advantage if you’re on the waitlist.

CPUser (07-26-2011, 04:14 PM): “Staff” means that the class exists but the school has yet to assign an instructor to it. It’s the same as TBA. Just keep checking every now and then as teachers are added periodically. You have to keep in mind that the schedules were first posted about two months ago so they can’t have everything set in stone for a while.

Miljazzerson (07-26-2011, 04:48 PM): That is incorrect. See above post.

CalPolyEE (07-26-2011, 06:32 PM): Buy books whenever you want. The list of needed books is (once again) here: [Search by Course | Buy Textbooks | Bronco Bookstore](<a href=“Error - Page Not Found | Bronco Bookstore”>Error - Page Not Found | Bronco Bookstore) I personally wait until the first day of class to buy a book as many teachers won’t use the book at all. I’ve even had teachers that assign reading but then the entire class ignores what you’ve read. Some teachers will have posted in the above link if they do not require a textbook.
Whew Alright back to being productive. If you guys have any more questions search the thread to see if I’ve already answered them and if not ask away! I’m going to try to set up notifications again.

Oh yeah and for the books I usually buy mine used at half.com or amazon.com and I usually get an older version as the only thing that changes in newer versions is the order of the chapters. I probably spent under $300 on books in my entire first year. See if you can do better!

Welcome back Frenchie17 :D

Nope, not going to Welcome Week. I live 6 hours away too !!

How does the mailing system work in school? If my parents want to send me something or I want to send something home, do I go to a regular post office? Because I thought I saw a post office in school.

If I’m moving in the day before school start, is there a parking lot not requiring a parking permit just for visitors? so I can move my stuff in…

Is the tuition at cpp based on the classes I take or based on units?

Any more advices for incoming first year dorming students :D

Incoming mail will be sent to the front desk or to the student housing office (by the pond). Packages are usually sent to the housing office and then a little yellow slip notifying you is put in your mailbox. Envelopes will be sent straight to the dorms. I think you can send outgoing mail through the dorms but for packages you need to go to Bronco Copy 'n Mail. Everything you drop off there goes through USPS I believe.

If you have a car make sure you get your parking permit right away, with a resident sticker. I’m pretty sure that the campus police doesn’t give out parking tickets the first week of school. You can call Parking and Transportation Services ( (909) 869-3061 ) to find out. If you don’t have a car then you can use one of the thirty minute parking spots just to drop your stuff off.

Tuition at CPP is based on units. 6.1+ units is full time. 6.0- units is part time. Once you pass six units (which you will since you are a full time student) it doesn’t make a difference if you take 7 units or 20 units; you pay the same price.

My greatest piece of advice to all incoming first year dorming students: whenever you’re in your room, leave your door OPEN! Especially the first couple weeks so that you can meet everyone around you. If you see someone you haven’t met before introduce yourself and ask them what they’re studying and where they come from to break the ice. The people in your hall are going to end up being your closest company for the next nine months so start off on a good foot.

Frenchie, do you know where the tuition fees are broken down? Like when will I have to pay? I found the Housing Fee chart but still trying to find tuition prices.

Hey Frenchie, thanks for asking my questions correctly. I wanted to kno how we would sign up for classes in Orientation because my advisor told me that since I am going to Computer Science instead of Engineer and Electronics Tech.; that I should come to go to their orientation.

Back to signing up for classes, do we enroll at a computer lab or the adviser tells us how to enroll individually or is it a group thing?

No I’m not bring my car to cpp. I’m getting dropped off therefore I’m not getting a parking permit. I plan to get there earlier than my assigned time to look for my class then bring my things into the dorm. Is there a visitor parking for more than 30 min? :(

Sorry confused, so if my parents are sending a package to me. They should put the housing address and my name on it instead of the school address?

Where is the laundromat in the dorm? and do I need to have a bronco card to use it?

Do I need to bring any wires to utilize the internet?

@CPUser
you sign up for classes at the computer lab by yourself and if you have questions, the advisor will be there and for my major, there were 2 upperclassmen present as well. I personally find the upperclassmen more useful o.O

you have to bring an ethernet cable to use the internet. no wifi in the dorms. :(

Quick question, on the orientation checklist, was exactly does “University documentation and paperwork” mean? It says acceptance letter and stuff but what exactly do I need?

Thanks for answering my questions, I also want to know how we are going to spend the night. Is there a roommate or is it a group thing?

wth is a ethernet cable >.< darn it, no wifi …

@Miljazzerson
I brought both my acceptance letter and actually went to my school to get my unofficial transcript. I didn’t even use them, so up to you whether you bring them or not.

@CPUser
They assign dorms to you. You dorm with a roommate in either a double or triple. My neighbor had a triple but I think her roommate did not show up, so had the room to herself. You dorm with the person who have the same major as you. There’s ac in the rooms, they give you a thin blanket, pillow, bedsheets x2, towels … some have small stains on them o.O

Advice, go to the orientation early ! the line gets really really long.

Thank You lovevnc, what about toiletries? I kno this is a stupid question, but what about showering and stuff? How does that go?
