Ask a Current UCSB Student Anything!

to CAorBust, yes it is harder to get in if you are from out of state. In terms of fitting in, I don’t think it really matters (but make sure to live in the dorm). There’s only one guy on my floor that’s from out of state that I know of (66 ppl on my floor), he’s from South Carolina, but he’s super chill and I would say that he’s had no issues fitting in.

Hey, I’m a sophomore in high school currently living in Maryland, dying to get away from here, haha. UCSB sounds absolutely PERFECT for me, me wanting to go into marine biology and all, but the problem is cost. I’m a straight As student, but I don’t know how far merit scholarships will get me. My question is how much of a financial aid package does UCSB give, and what are my chances for getting in?

I really don’t know for Out-Of-State students. However, for financial aid, here is an estimator on how much UCSB Will give you based on need. (it will probably change though in two years when you are actually applying to ucsb)

How hard is it to get Santa Ynez for your second year, even though it’s a lottery?

perry, your GPA is very low for UCSB, it should generally be around the 3.9 area weighted.

Money is not a factor in whether or not they accept you.

What are you SATs?

Is there a women’s rugby club?

why dont people in santa barbara like using cars? apparently bikes and skateboards are the best ways of getting around? WHY NO CARS? i absolutely love my car :[

iownchopsticks,

People at the UCSB campus don’t need a car as much as people on other campuses do. Most people live in Isla Vista which is right adjacent to campus. A car is helpful when people feel like going out to Goleta or Santa Barbara, and even then, a lot of people just take the buses or their bikes. If you’re actually going to leave the campus/Isla Vista often, then sure, you can take a car. Some people bring their cars and never use them except to go back to their hometowns every several weeks.

Just so you know, UCSB isn’t actually really in Santa Barbara, so if your question was referring to the actual town of Santa Barbara, then, well, they use cars there ;)

Hi, UCSB is one of my top choice schools and a few days ago I received an invitation to attend a ceremony for “high achieving applicants” on March 14th. When I registered to attend, it stated that this does not necessarily reflect that we were admitted. Does anyone know if this is true? I just dont understand why they would invite all their highest achieving applicants to some ceremony if they did not get in…

I know in the past those who were invited to this received admissions but I wanted to know if that was true for this year. Im not sure if this has already been addressed, I tried searching threads just but just found threads from a few years back regarding the invitation. Thanks.

sorry i forgot to put that on…

any shot? anything i can do to really improve my chances of going there?

Your SATs are good and in the range of UCSB. your only major problem is your GPA. is it unweighted?

how is the biology program at UCSB? I heard that all UC’s have respected science programs and I know SB’s physics program is great but I havent seen too much about the bio program. im looking to do pre-med.

also, how is the musical theater program?

Hey! so to come to ucsb has been a hope of mine for about a year now, and as the application process comes around, i have a couple questions.

first of all, i hear FT is the best freshman dorm. from what ive read and seen, i pretty much agree. i’m very social and like to have fun, so i’m almost sold; do you agree?

i’m thinking of majoring in chemical engineering. ive been exposed to a lot of hard work at my private high school so i think i’d be up for it; i don’t want to kill myself, however. have you heard anything about this major?

freshman 3.1
sophomore:3.4
Junior:3.0
Senior:3.4
SAT: 2300
Extracurriculars: 300 hours of community service, internship in accounting(i want to major in accounting), 1 year JV tennis

Do i have a chance to go to UCSB

random question - are there any motorcycle riders at UCSB ? and are there basketball courts ?

Yes, there are motorcycle riders. I think most of the big parking lots on campus have motorcycle parking.

There are also basketball courts:
[Google maps: courts by Robertson gym](<a href=“Google Maps”>Google Maps)
[Google maps: courts by dorms](<a href=“Google Maps”>Google Maps)

And in Isla Vista, there’s a basketball court at Greek Park (Segovia & Emb. Del Norte), and 1.5 courts will be built in Estero Park in the future once the Estero Park Master Plan gets under way.

cool, thanks guys.

RC251: I know you took polisci at UCSb (right ?) - did you like it ? I know it’s a silly question… If it were my choice I would take polisci but I’m also thinking of economics because of the better job opportunities with just a bachelors. my goal is to go to pharmacy school after I graduate so I probably won’t have a minor.

muserz-
yeah thats my weighted gpa. not UC gpa just normal. its 85 85 87 and then hopefully higher senior year.
what do you think?
