Ask a Deerfield freshmen!

The courseload of freshmen year is definitely manageable. Obviously, there may be a few days when you have decided to make the decision to hang out with friends or finish a tv show before you do your homework…and you learn from those decisions! It’s all about time management and understanding that you cannot have fun all of the time. As a sohphomor now, in retrospect, I stayed up late some nights when I really shouldn’t have. But then again, those are the nights that you’ll remember far after high school is over–not that history test that you studied for or the physics project that gave you trouble. Does that make sense?
Is it hard to get high grades here? Well, teachers don’t throw out the 93-100 grades to just anyone. You have to work for good grades here and teachers are more than happy to meet with you at anytime if you are unhappy with your performance in a class in any way.
The teachers here are great! They’re supportive and often times they are your coaches in a sport. You learn a lot about your boarding schoool teachers that you wouldn’t know about a teacher at a day school.
My transition wasn’t too bad–as easy as the transition from middle school to high school can possibly be. Deerfield does an excellent job of making the transition as smooth as possible. They even have the incoming freshmen take a trip where they stay in cabins for 2-3 days and do a lot of orientation activities before school starts to get to know thir classmates!
…I’m guessing that you would receive your notification via email? I’m not too sure but I believe that you may be able to find out the answer to that question by going on the Deerfield website or calling the admissions office!

Any other questions? We’ve got a lot of snow right now!

Thanks bingalot!

No problem! I’m happy to answer your questions.

thank you!!

is it kind of weird at first moving into a new school with new people from new cultures? I mean, I being international, do you think it would be easy for me to adapt?

How is this being handled currently?

@turks12345, It is not difficult for internationals to assimilate in our welcoming community. In fact, we don’t even notice nationality as being a factor in assimilation and our daily interactions. We have students from many countries and a vibrant community from latin american countries as well. Good luck and you’ll love this place.

@PxAlaska, As the news article says the issue is under investigation. It is a 30-year old incident that will take time to investigate to find the facts. Until then we have no further info. Our Head of School made it clear that they have a zero tolerance policy for such relations.

@Chrysanthe thank you for your feedback. It’s nice to hear from a DA student. Is there a rivalry between Hotchkiss and DA? I originally interviewed with Hotchkiss first and one of the things they told me was DA had no diversity. Being new to the whole thing, I didn’t want to be the only minority at a school. It ultimately led to my application withdrawal. I have a feeling that Hotchkiss was lying now though.

Choate is our rival and that’s a tough place to be in for them. It’s not fun for them to be constantly licking their wounds.

Hotchkiss and Deerfield are schools similar in size and many other aspects and they compete for the same applicant pool, like Exeter and Andover do. I visited Hotchkiss as well and I have many friends there and the diversity at these two schools is similar. We have pretty much all ethnicities and many nationalities represented at Deerfield including some native Americans.

@Chrysanthe thanks for you message. I had that question stuck in my head all the time.

Sigh. I really wish I applied to Deerfield now.

@GoGreen Deerfield is my top top toppest choice and I’m really nervous/ excited to know whether or not I got accepted.
I suppose you’re a student or a teacher there. Your school is amazing, I just want to congratulate you and make you feel reallyyyyy proud :). I love Deerfield’s philosophy it is so correct. I’ve watched all admission videos at least three times. Oh myyy I love that school. Just wanted you to know how fond I am about it ;).

So I know this has been asked a bazillion and one times and a whole thread exists about it, but how will Deerfield notify applicants?

email on the 9th intl and package mail natl

Thanks turks12345! :)
