Ask a Deerfield freshmen!

Just wondered how you see day students fitting in? Any thing to check out in particular on revisit days ( to get a sense of what it’s like for a day student)?

This review should say it all!! We have a great soccer team and as for popularity every sport here at Deerfield has fans.
@Daykidmom Well I can honestly say that one of my closest friends is a day student and I am a boarder. You make connections with who you make connections with–day students are not thought of any differently here at Deerfield. Sometimes you can go a whole year here without knowing someone is a day student! Seriously, some day students are on campus so often that you never really can tell. They fit right in so you have nothing to worry about.
To get a sense of what it’s like for a day students there is nothing that I would suggest that you should do in particular–you’re host will more likely than not be a fellow day student and they’ll show you the ropes.

Hope that those coming to visit DA have a blast. The weather is great and us students can’t wait for you all to arrive.
As always, I am here and happy to answer any questions. PM me or just post them here!

Bingalot - thanks for creating this thread! I am going to attend Deerfield this fall (Class of 2017) and I would like to ask if it is hard to get into the JV/Varsity Basketball teams.

Girl’s basketball here at DA has two teams–JV and Varsity while the list for boy’s teams can get a bit more extensive with quad squad (freshmen/sophomore team), thirds, JV, and Varisty. Varsity is usually reserved for those who have obviously been playing for quite some time and may even be looking to play in college and the seriousness of the teams get lesser as you move down ranks. Every team is fun and every team works hard but I would say that there is no harm in trying out for any team that you want! Obviously not everyone can make the same team, but coaches are happy to work with you on improving your skills and whatnot.
In short I bet that you showing interest in the Varsity/JV team means that you’ve been playing for a while. Go for it. PM me with any further questions!! Enjoy your summer and see you in the fall!

ASK MORE QUESTIONS! I know that I was starving for information around this time 2 years ago…wow…and I want to be here to answer any and all questions that you guys may have. I’ve honestly enjoyed my time here at DA so much–

Go Big Green!

So here’s a funny story… my mom forgot to check her email and literally ten minutes ago, I found out that my course selections are due tomorrow… fun. Not to mention that I have no idea what my Dainfo account is. Will that cause a huge problem if I’m a bit late on my course selections?

You should have received login info for your DAInfo account. If not, call admissions and they will give you the login. As far as the course selections, it should be relatively easy. You select 5 classes: English (300 level if you are a Junior), Math (based on your placement) Example: Pre-calculus or Calculus AB /BC, Language (based on your placement) example: Spanish III, History (Honors or Regular US History), and Science (Biology Honors, AP Biology depending on what you have already taken). At Deerfield you take physics as a freshman, chemistry as a sophomore, biology as a junior. You should be OK if you are a couple of days late.

BUMP

–ask more questions!! Has summer started for you guys yet? Hope you enjoy it and I look forward to all of the newly admitted arrivals being on campus.
I’m a rising junior and it’ll be my third year at DA~ 2015.
but for now I’ll be enjoying my summer while making sure that I answer any questions that you all may have :)

I just found this page. Im going to be in the Deerfield class of 2017. I handed in almost all of my forms after the due date :frowning: Im kind of scared and kinda of excited. Can you give me the dirt on Deerfield. Tell me interesting stuff, not the things I could find on the website. Like the gossip!!! Also, what I should bring for the dances.

What are you scared about and what are you excited about?

I had a dream that when I came to campus everyone was going to be so mean to me and start shouting at me and then i was going to fall into a pit and… yeah. But then I was excited that it was going to be SUPER AMAZING!!!

Don’t forget to tell give the dirt on DA

trollin…?

Never mind I’m going to ask my Green Key.

bumpppppppppp

Hi! I want to apply to Deerfield in 2014, and if I get in, I want to join the swim team. Do you know how fast you have to be? Do you think you can get some times from meets for the jv girls team? Thanks :D

So happy to hear that you’re interested in DA!
Unfortunately, I couldn’t tell you much about the Deerfield JV Swim team…maybe you could contact the school over the summer? Or even when school starts someone could put you in touch with a swim coach.
Sorry that I couldn’t be of much help. If you have any questions I’ll do my best to answer them for you–that goes for everyone.

AND

I just thought that I’d make it clear that I will be entering my junior year in the fall
Seems like I was just a freshman yesterday…

Hi! I’m going to be in the deerfield class of 2015. I was wondering what the dorms are like and are there any tips on what I should bring that isn’t on the list provided? I am going to be in Scaife btw, thanks :)

What the dorms are like…I don’t know what you want to know specifically! Since you will be joining my grade as a fellow 2015er I can tell you that you will be living in a dorm with girls in the class of 2015 and girls in the class of 2014 (juniors and seniors only). As an underclassmen you would have lived with both freshmen and sophomores with two senior proctors. I have so many favorite things about Deerfield but I can say with confidence that dorm life is one of my very favorites. Most all of the dorms here at Deerfield are singles and you’ll have a single in Scaife. Scaife has two floors and fairly large hallways–it is across from an underclassmen giels dorm named Mather and the closest academic building to it is probably the Classroom Building (languages) or the main school buildng where all of the admissions stuff happens and where you will be taking history. Living in a dorm is obviously something that sets boarding school apart from regular high schools I’ve had great dorm experiences. You get so close with people so fast and sometimes, when there is no homework to be done, I feel like I’m at summer camp with some of the greatest people. Not to mention the hall feeds that we get like brownies. Nothing better than a snack after studying.
Tips on what to bring? A fan. It gets hot. No need to bring school supplies unless there is something that you feel that you simply cannot live without. We have the Hitchcock House where you can get all of the school supplies that you’ll need. Bring FOOD. Feeds don’t happen all the time and it is always good to food in your rooom. Things like microwavable mac and cheese is good to have in case you decide to not make your way over to the dining hall–but any food will do, really. Chips, cookies, popcorn. I feel like I’ve been talking about snacks for a while? You get the point.
Bring lots of socks. I mean, doing laundry I swear socks just run away somehow! Music speakers usually come in handy.
Now that I think about it I will definitely make a running list of stuff that I realize I need during the school year and post it here.
That stuff was just what I could think of off the top of my head. I’ll post more as I think of more!!
