Are you talking about the race in which people have to complete the rubik’s cube in order to start running…or something like that? I’ve never seen it happen besides for in the admission video but there was someone that got up on stage at school meeting and did a rubik’s cube in some absurd amount of time. And we have ping pong tournaments where the final match is played in front of the whole school. In short, Deerfield is always looking for fun things like “curb races” or the wonderful live display of the harlem shake that the class of 2013 brought to us, to do on campus. And even if we haven’t done a curb race in a while you can organize one for sure!
Are you wondering how I dress for class? In that case I can tell you that I do not wear pant suits or anything like that…no girls really do here for class. I don’t know what being “dressed up” means to you but the thing is a lot of girls take the dress code in different directions. I like to think of a dress that I would wear as a class dress dress as a “I’m hanging out with friends but we are going somewhere kind of fancy dress” because it’s kind of what we’re doing, right?haha Same goes for whatever cardigan you decide to pair it with. But that’s just me! There’s nothing wrong with dressing up sometimes. It feels pretty good to break out the fancy dresses every so often.
It gets easier in the winter though (as far as clothing is concerned). Buy the warmest and cosiest sweaters and pair them with chords. You’ll look good. You’ll be warm. What else can you ask for in New England winter?
I don’t know if any of that helped at all? Hopefully it did. You can PM me if you have any questions–or just ask them here if they’re very general!!

I have a couple of questions about DA (I’m going to be in the class of 2017).

Can you tell me what the girl underclassmen dorms are like? I’m going to be in McAlister.

Also, how cold does it get up there?
3.When are we going to get are class schedules?

oh yeah and if theres anything else you think I should know you can just, well, tell me. Or you can PM me. Thank you!

@stargirl3 Then you’ll have no problem figuring out what to pack!! And as far as class dress goes it’s always a good idea to maybe not buy as many things, figure out what you would like to wear as class dress, and then buy a whole bunch of it when you go home on the first break (thanksgiving break). That way you aren’t stuck with clothes that you’ve decided not to use!

@loco4cocoa 1. Girl underclassmen dorms are wonderful! I’ve lived in Mac and I can tell you that it is fairly close to most academic buildings, it has 3 floors, and the rooms are fairly large for the most part. You won’t have a roommate and you’ll get to meet so many new people because it’s such a big dorm! PM me what floor you’re on so I can tell you more specifics but no matter what floor you’ll be on you’ll have two senior proctors living on your hall.
2. I don’t know where you’re from but it gets seriously cold. SERIOUSLY COLD. And it snows and no–class does not get cancelled. So dress warm. Pack warm.
3. I’m not sure when class schedules come out…no earlier than a month before school starts for sure, though. You could probably contact someone at the academy about that.

I’m so happy to hear that you’ll be attending Deerfield. As the name of the forum states I was once a Deerfield freshman so I know what it’s like to have a ton of questions. I’ll do my best to pass onto you any advice/suggestions that I can think of–look for some PMs coming your way!

I am thinking about applying to Deerfield for my Junior year. I do not know anything about Deerfield but you managed to convince me in like 5 minutes. Are you allowed to apply junior year or only freshman year?

SO NICE OF YOU TO SAY THAT!!
And yes!!! Deerfield takes in about 30 new new juniors every year but I’m not quite sure how many apply. I feel like I keep saying this but I really mean it–if you have any questions about the applications process or just Deerfield in general don’t hesitate to ask!!

Ok. What Is the tuition to get in? How much tuition did you get eliminated from financial aid? How did you convince your parents to go to deerfield?

^everything you need to know about financial aid is on that page and if you have any other questions you should contact the admissions office.

As far as convincing my parents to allow me to go to Deerfield…I didn’t really have to do that much convincing. Once they read all about it and immediately realized how great of an opportunity Deerfield could be they were just as set on Deerfield, and on boarding school in general, as I was.
We haven’t been disappointed!

I’ve heard a little about the dances at Deerfield, and I was wondering how many dances/formals/semiformals are there in a year. Also, what do most people wear to those dances?

@Pi12345 One of the things that I really love about Deerfield is that you get the same welcoming experience that you do on a tour/revisit day as you you would on just another regular Deerfield day. We have a no cell phone policy so no one is looking down at their phones-people are saying hi to you and smiling and I really love that. And I can honestly say that I have never heard of an instance of serious bullying here at DA. If ever you have a problem though the deans are always available, we have quite a few school psychologists, and we also have a group of students called peer counselors who serve as outlets for kids to talk to (they go through training)! Help is never far away if you need it .

@sprinkles926 haha What have you heard exactly? We have quite a few regular dances here at Deerfield which take place in places like the greer-and I’m sure that you’ve heard about the Denunzio Disco which is the first and biggest of the year. Not everyone goes to other dances but I would say that 99% of students attend that dance. But like I said we have a dance pretty much every other weekend!
Thr only formals that we have is the semiformal dance that happens in the winter and of course the separate junior and senior proms at the end of the spring term. People get dressed up fotr those, of course. Suit, tie, nice dresses.
As for the other dances there are all kinds of themes for those ranging from ninja themed to sports themed. For the denunzio disco people wear the most outrageous neon outfits that they can find so that dance is definitely the craziest by far.
Oh! And how could I almost forget Sadie’s?? It’s when an underclassmen is paired with an upperclassmen and they go to the dance together and take pictures in halloween costumes that usually go together (basketball player, referee–things like that). There’s always big talk around campus about that-especially for underclassmen because they don’t know who their upperclassmen dates are until they show up to the dorm!!! People usually wait to order their costumes until around Halloween, though.

Oh, I forgot all about hoedown! That’s where girls ask guys which is weird because shouldn’t that be Sadie’s?hah, whatever. We all dress in plaid and whatnot and girls ask guys to the dance.
As for being prepared for things I’d say to bring whatever costume type items you have to school. Your resources combined with the resources of both friends and proctors will have you covered for any and all dances!!

It’s best to do interviews right away I think…September-December. But you’d need to schedule them pretty early, I think. Seriously, some days are so busy (I’m a tourguide) and you want to make sure that you get your interview done before the application deadline which is like January 15th I believe.
And I would say to start doing your research now and know which schools you want to apply to by the end of the summer so that you can start scheduling interviews. Start on the essays/reccomendation forms as soon as they are available to you!

So do your parents have to go with you to the interview because my parents still think that it’s a horrible idea so if I do go I would probably have to fly by myself to New Hampshire.

Hey guys! I’ll be at Deerfield next year! Well if they don’t kick me out because of all my missing paperwork. I’ve been out of town at camp without internet access and my mom forgot to send in my forms! Do you know if that will be a big problem? Anyway, does anyone know about the Rosenwald dorms? Also, does a parent have to sign you in when you first arrive or do they even have to come at all? Also, (this might be a stupid question) what type of shoes are most popular for girls to wear? I’m a Sperry type of girl but I have no idea what’s the usual in Massachusetts (I live in Texas). Also, what’s popular to wear to sit down dinners and just to regular class? What is Denuzio Disco? What do you wear for that dance? Lastly, do you have any tips on what I should bring with me? Sorry for all of the questions. Can’t wait to see you in September! By the way, I’m Hawa and I’ll be in the class of 2015. What’s your name? I hope I’ll get to meet you around campus in a few months. Thanks again.
