Ask a Deerfield freshmen!

buuuuuuump!
Choate day 2013 - beat Choate!

I visited Deerfield yesterday and loved it! My interviewer was amazing and I had a blast.

My DS started there this year and is having a GREAT time. Happy to ask him any questions you might have!

bump

I have a few questions:

how was your admission experience?

how "smart’’ are the students there?

what is the average nightly workload and if i do sports (swimming) will i still be able to finish my hw?

Nearly EVERYONE does sports in a selective boarding school.

Swimmer girl-not sure what you mean with “how was your admission experience?” My son liked his tour, and thought his interview was ok-- but didn’t love his interviewer or really feel like he connected with her. We did meet some people from his ECs-- coaches, music directors-- and they were fantastic, invited us to come to performances, etc., and kept in touch. The application itself was very straightforward, though the essays required a fair amount of thought. The admission letter itself was very warm and revisit day was great. I’d encourage you to be in contact with people connected to your ECs (sports, music). If that’s not what you meant by your question, maybe ask it more specifically.

Yes, kids are smart-- as I’m sure they are at so many of these schools. What really stands out is how engaged everyone is-- in their classes/studies, their sports, their art-- whatever extra curricular activities they have. I think the admission office really looks for that-- not just good numbers on SSATs and grades (which of course, lots of applicants have).

Time… Well, as GMT said, everyone has sports and other activities --in fact, everyone is required to do a sport or other “co-curricular” every day. Most people have one or two free periods during the day in which to study, and there’s study hall every night. There’s apparently less work freshman and sophomore year than junior and Senior (especially junior). Most subjects have honors or accelerated classes, and these move faster and have more work-- so the more of those you take, the more work you have. My son is only a freshman, but is taking an honors math and accelerated science, but still has time to do sports and practice an instrument every day. You do have to learn some time management skills, but everyone has lots to do and it all seems to get done, with some time for fun as well.

Feel free to ask any other questions!

My daughter is currently an eighth grader, and we have not been considering boarding school as we can not afford it. We only recenlty began looking into Deerfield Academy when my daughter received a letter from the school personally inviting her to join one of their sports teams and community there.
As I have been looking into the school, I think it would be a great opportunity for her. However, I am now realizing there seems to be a lot to the application process, and a 13% chance she would be accepted anyway.

My daughter is highest honors (all A’s), is in accelerated english and high school geometry, has been on varsity cross country since 7th grade receiving awards, plays in the concert band and marching band (flute), plays school, town, and travel basketball in the winter and AAU basketball in the spring and fall, and runs track in the spring.

I am wondering, does this invitation she received mean that she is already welcome to the school? Or does it possibly mean any sports scholarship money toward tuition? I’m not even sure if they have sports scholarships to attend. Or does it only mean that IF she is accepted after the normal application process, she would be welcome to the team?

Any advice is appreciated. There is only about one month to figure this all out as the deadline is in January.

My one cent:

Deerfield seems to have lots of financial aid based on need, so if you cannot afford it, I would apply anyway and fill out the financial aid application as well.

As far as I know, an invitation to a sports team does not guarantee acceptance, but it might give her a leg up in the admissions process.

Good luck! (And she must be fast… I’m jealous! :D)

BUMP BUMP
Sorry that I haven’t been on in a while! Junior year will do that to you/ I completely forgot about this thread :D

BUMP!

Wow it’s been a long time since anyone has been here. @bingalot‌ and I are now seniors, but we’re still available to field any questions regarding Deerfield/general boarding school life :)

If @deerfield15 and @bingalot don’t mind, I’d love to contribute some stuff about DA too! Just finished freshman year  Btw, good luck to you guys! one more year!!

MODERATOR’S NOTE: This is an old thread, so I am closing it.

You can start a new thread, but it should be titled, “Ask Questions about Deerfield Here.” We don’t allow a single person to post a “question” thread anymore. Anyone can ask or answer questions in the thread.
