wow thank you, that’s very detailed and helpful

No problem! I got it straight from the website-you’ll also get a hard copy when you arrive on campus.

In your opinion, is it better to have a single room or have a roommate? Have you always been in a single room (I assume you have, based on the amount if single rooms)? I feel like having a roommate would break the ice, but having a single room would nice to have some privacy.

Well see the thing about this question is I can only give my one-sided opinion since, like you stated, I’ve always had a roommate because of Deerfield’s high percentage of single rooms. When I get asked this while giving a tour of campus I say that I honestly enjoy not having a roommate! Yes they can be alright “ice breakers” I guess but don’t we have orientation activities for that? And what if you and your roommate truly don’t get along? Yes it is helpful to learn to respect the differences of others but I just think that roommates can be a bit of a hassle sometimes. It’s nice to be able to go to your room, study based on when is good for you, and not have to worry about disturbing someone else.
But like I said this is just my opinion. I mean, there’s basically no avoiding the roommate situation in college so I figure why not enjoy having a single for as long as possible?!haha It’s all about what you want your experience to be like, I guess. Don’t feel like not having a roommate makes you a loner in the boarding school world, though. You bond so much with your hall/dormmates over the course of a school year that not having a roommate isn’t a big deal.

This is a pretty random question, but for the walk through lunches and dinners, can you go anytime you want? To clarify, can you go anytime in the scheduled hours? Thanks so much!!

Yes. You can go at whatever time works best for you during the set hours for walk through meals.

Thanks! That really appeals to me (so do sit down dinners), because I tend to study for long hours and eat a bit later.

Glad to hear it! For some it does take a little while longer to get used to…but I’d say the limited amount of walk through meals is just another part of what makes Deerfield the school that it is.

What do students usually wear on the first day of school - not classes but orientation and check in. My daughter and I have different ideas about what to wear.

Also, how do advisories function? Are there weekly meetings with the whole group or more one-on-one time? My daughter was also curious if the advisories were co-ed or mixed between grades.

I can assure you that it isn’t uncommon to see people wearing running shorts and t-shirts on move-in day. You are, after all, going to be moving your daughter’s things. Sometimes up to the third floor of a dorm…no one expects you to be in your finest outfits!haha But some people don’t feel comfortable wearing that…so I’d just say to be as comfortable as possible. Jean shorts and a comfortable shirt.
What is it that you has in mind?
Every Thursday we have advisory lunch where everyone in the advisory eats a sit down meal together. It’s a great bonding experience but most one on one advisee/advisor time happens outside of that. Advisors reach out to the advisees and vise versa to just check in on how Deerfield is going. What grade will your daughter be in? I cannot say for sure…but since she is new to Deerfield she will most likely be placed in an all girl advisory with a few more people that are new like she is. The advisories are mixed within grade levels.
Let me know if you or your daughter have any other questions! She must be so excited.

Thank you for your helpful responses Bingalot.

I was just looking at the Deerfield menu and saw vegan mac and cheese. It made my day!

Mac and cheese day is always a good day at DA :D

…bumping this thread to see if anyone has any last minute questions before my sophomore summer ends to allow my junior year to begin!

I just wanted to wish everyone a great school year!!

Thank you so much!
We’re starting tomorrow:D

Well, best of luck!! I know an incoming freshman, her name is Kathryn. If you see her, which I don’t know if you will, just say hi.

I have yet to meet her…but I’ll make sure to say hi if I do!

My DS started is a day student freshman at DA and has found it very friendly. I went to the day parent dinner a couple of nights ago, and also hear no complaints. We did hear from several day student families–before we started-- that the more time spent on campus as a day student (evenings, weekends), the better-- just because there aren’t that many day students, so it’s important to get to know boarders. In talking to other day parents the other night, there is clearly a range in how much extra time kids are spending on campus (some seem to be there every night until 10 PM and every weekend day-- some leave right after school every day), but everyone seemed to be doing fine socially. My DS usually stays late one weeknight so far, and goes in for at least part of one weekend day-- but some kids are spending much more time than that. DS has more boarder friends right now than day–although he’s liked many day kids he’s met–just because he doesn’t have that many day kids in his classes or activities. I specifically told him about your post in the car this morning, and he confirmed that he’s found DA to be very friendly so far. He did ask if maybe you heard the negative comments about Deerfield from someone at Choate :-)

Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions. Really, even before we started there, the only negative thing we heard on this issue is just that there aren’t a lot of day kids (which is true), so day kids do have to make a bit of an effort to get to know boarders. If your daughter leaves right after school every day and doesn’t go in on weekends, that might be hard-- but, again, people have not been unfriendly, so far at least. I’m not sure exactly what you heard.
